FROME’S mayor, cllr Anita Collier, has spoken of the ‘fabulous groups’ and the ‘amazing work’ being done in the town in this unprecedented year of Covid-19.
In her annual message, (below), she says that the way local people have rallied round to help each other during the pandemic reflects Frome’s caring nature and its wonderful community spirit and makes her proud to be part of the town.
Cllr Collier writes, “What an extraordinary year this is!
“I’d like to take this chance to talk about the wonderful things that have been going in the town and all the fabulous groups that are working together to help us through what has been the strangest of times.
“Thanks to the incredible ‘Check on your five neighbours’ scheme and the amazing work that’s been going on to bring streets and neighbourhoods together, we’re building strong communities all around the town that are helping us all get through this pandemic with love and support and practical help.
“The community fridge, the food bank, the sharing shop, the sharing boxes and many other thoughtful projects are testament to the generosity that has always been part of Frome’s caring nature.
“I’m so proud to be a part of this town and being your Mayor for the last six months has made me appreciate so many people and groups who are giving up their time to help.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you who are involved in giving up your time and energy to look after the hungry, the homeless, the worried and the lonely.
“Christmas is coming and I think, as we stand on that horizon, that we will see a future ahead that will enable us all once again to enjoy the freedoms we’re so used to. To meet up with family and friends, to go to the pub, to shop freely (locally of course), to travel, even maybe to go out without a mask. Once the vaccines are widely distributed, we will finally be able to get back to normality, so let’s think positively about the future.
“Christmas is nearly here and it’s a time for celebration, a time to enjoy being at home together with family. This time of year can be difficult for some, maybe even more so this year, so it’s even more important to check they’re ok. So, let’s make sure we do that. And this Christmas I’d like us to focus on being a Christmas of light, so light up your houses, light up your gardens and let’s welcome the light back into our lives.
“Good times are ahead. We live in a wonderful town, that’s creative, caring and compassionate. I wish you all the joy and freedom that lies ahead in the coming months. Let’s embrace it when it arrives and let’s keep building on our wonderful community spirit.
“Thank you, Frome, for all that you are and all that you do. Stay safe, keep well and a very Merry Christmas to you all!”
