JOIN writer-historian Peter Clark for an event hailed as one of the most unusual events of the Frome festival titled ‘The Meddling of Mrs Harris’ at Rook Lane on Tuesday 10th July.
Writer-historian Peter Clark will present a performed version of American author Mark Twain’s monologue ‘King Leopold’s Soliloquy’. This biting satire written in 1905 imagines the rage of the monarch when the ‘meddlesome’ missionary’s wife shows her pictures of his monstrous cruelty to the world and ends his tyranny in the Belgian Congo: ”The incorruptible kodak – that a child can carry in its pocket – the only witness I couldn’t bribe.” The woman who took the pictures has been hailed as The Mother of Human Rights: Alice Seeley Harris, from Frome.
This event is supported by Nevertheless Productions and there will be an after-show chat with the team. Tickets are £6 and any profits will go to Anti Slavery International. The performance starts at 7.30 with a bar available throughout.
