Frome’s ‘Operation Christmas Cheer’

February 21, 2024

THE Frome community is rallying round to celebrate Christmas so everyone can still enjoy the festive season, despite the pandemic.

The Christmas lights are up, householders continue to Light the Night with their window displays (see page 22!), Father Christmas is heading to town, and local shops and businesses are back open and welcoming your support. Churches are also holding events with restricted numbers and/or online events.

Local charity, Active and In Touch, who are supporting those who are vulnerable or feeling isolated, are asking for more volunteers to help them keep in touch with people over the festive season. Following on with the work of Frome Town Council, who set up the response to the pandemic, the charity is offering a telephone befriending service, a chance to meet with a volunteer on a walk, sending Christmas cards, and supporting a hamper delivery scheme to those who will be alone this Christmas.

With other towns cancelling their usual Father Christmas visits around the streets, Frome Lions and Rotary clubs have pulled out all the stops to ensure that Frome children are not disappointed this year.

They say, “Father Christmas has once again asked the members of the Frome Lions and Rotary clubs to assist him  this Christmas.

“We are absolutely delighted to be able to run the float around Frome and surrounding villages this year. Following a huge amount of special preparation, and great support from the local council and police, we will be able to bring some seasonal joy and excitement to brighten up everyone in the community as Christmas approaches.”

“The position relating to the Covid-19 regulations this year requires some alternative arrangements having to be made,” say the Lions and Rotary clubs. “Having been approved by the authorities, the Santa Float will be running from December 4th on 17 days before the big day on the 25th December. The dates and routes are listed on page 24 and can also be found on the Frome Lions and Rotary websites and Facebook pages.

“The most significant change will be that no house-to -house collections will take place and helpers will not be knocking on individual doors, or collecting cash at the roadside. Mobile phone users can donate by text. To donate text SANTAFROME and either 1,3,5,10 or 20 to 70085. Full details will be on either side of the float.

“In addition, there is a Just Giving website, where donations can be made using www.justgiving.com/campaign/santafrome. If anyone has been saving up all their pennies, all is not lost! There will hopefully also be a cash donation drop off point in the centre of Frome. Details will be provided on all social media outlets.

“Unfortunately, handwritten letters to Father Christmas cannot be accepted this year, and for this reason the post box on the float will not be in use.  It will still be possible to send them by email to santa@fromelions.org.uk and they will be forwarded to Father Christmas.  Responses to letters will be sent and rest assured, boys and girls, that Father Christmas will, as usual, be reading all your letters in time for the delivery of presents.

“Spectators are requested not to approach the float or marshals at any time. They are also requested to ensure they comply with social distancing regulations and please remember the rule of 6 if groups are gathering.  Please also remember HANDS – FACE – SPACE.

“All of this is of course subject to review following any adjustments to instructions which may be issued by the government or local authorities relating to Covid19.”

Routes For the Frome Father Christmas float 2020

Please note: Some roads might have to be missed out, if the Santa float has difficulty passing parked cars. As a result of Covid19 restrictions, marshals will not be able to knock on doors to get them moved.

  • Frome volunteers knit hearts for palliative care patients

Frome volunteers have knitted more than 100 hearts to support palliative care patients and their families.

The hearts were donated to the Royal United Hospital in Bath following an appeal, coordinated through the Co-operative Funeralcare – Frome, which called on local knitters to create hearts using a specific pattern.

The appeal came after a Frome resident introduced the team at the Co-op to the Compassion Memory Hearts scheme following her uncle’s death, when a heart had been left on his pillow.

The scheme sees volunteers knit pairs of small hearts. One heart is left on the patient’s pillow, while the other is given to their family as a keepsake, offering comfort and connection when they cannot be together.

  • Frome woman raises over £36,500 for cancer charity with running challenge

Frome fundraiser Rachel Clark has raised over £36,500 for a cancer counselling charity through a mile-a-day running challenge.

Rachel ran a mile a day in 2019, 2024 and 2025 running in all weathers and encouraging residents to join her and donate to We Hear You (WHY), a cancer counselling charity in Frome.

Rachel said, “Over the years approximately 10,205 epic people joined in with the challenge; the youngest was four years old, the oldest was 77, thousands interacted online, we ran through all the seasons, from heatwaves to blizzards.

“The ripple effect of 365 was magic. Some of you were inspired to take up running and many of you took up fundraising for WHY yourselves. Fundamentally we made a difference, in so many ways. This challenge was never about distance; it was always more than just a mile.”

New Year is a traditional time for new ventures and new hobbies. If you’re feeling the urge, why not find out about the many volunteering opportunities in Frome?

Local charities like Fair Frome, Frome Birth Talk and Purple Elephant are always on the lookout for new people to run services, fundraise for them and raise awareness. • Somerset Council faces ‘lingering death’ over £73m budget gap

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset Council is facing a ‘lingering death’ in the face of an estimated £73m budget gap, councillors and auditors have warned.

The council recently launched a consultation on its initial budget proposals, including just over £20m of new savings or increases in its existing fees and charges.

Clive Heaphy, the council’s interim chief financial officer, had previously admitted that the authority would require exceptional financial support from the government for a third consecutive year in order to balance its books without totally exhausting its reserves.

But members of the council’s audit committee have warned that the council may have left it too late to turn things around – making effective bankruptcy increasingly likely.

This comes after external auditors Grant Thornton warned that the council had to go faster to change the way it delivered services, issuing three statutory recommendations or ‘red cards’ against the authority.

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column – New Year in the garden

Now the festive season is behind us, we can start planning for the year ahead.

The weather will be mixed but dry days give us a chance to do our bit now for wildlife – whether we have a pot outside the back door, our own garden or access to an allotment, green space or one of Frome’s community gardens. The first step is to resist the urge to tidy up.

That pile of ‘rubbish’ in the corner – dead grass stems, dried leaves, twigs and branches – will provide a wonderful habitat for a range of wildlife, from tiny spiders and beetles through to hibernating hedgehogs. Allowing even a small part of a garden to keep its winter debris will be a great help. Late winter is often the toughest time for birds, when many of the berries have been stripped. Feeding them (being mindful of cleanliness to minimise the risk of spreading disease) has the added bonus of bringing them close – a delight to watch in the dark days of winter.

  • Charity keeps Lisa Wells’ memory alive with successful fundraising year

A Frome charity has reported a successful year of fundraising in 2025 in memory of Lisa Wells, who died from bowel cancer in 2019.

Lisa’s Army helps cancer patients create lasting memories by providing days out, experiences and special treat boxes for those going through chemotherapy.

The charity was set up in 2020, after Lisa died from bowel cancer on 17th August 2019. She launched the charity before she died and, ever since, the team has been dedicated to fundraising, holding events and working hard to offer support, help and positive experiences to individuals facing a cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

“We have had a good year of fundraising and raised nearly £5,000,” said Lisa’s mum, Deanna Wells. “Fundraising can be hard and we do need more than that to keep going properly but we have a really dedicated committee. We have a few new ones join us. Lisa started this charity; we have got to keep it going.”

  • Pancake race to mark Valentine’s Day

Planning is underway for a family-friendly pancake race event in Frome Town Centre to jointly mark Pancake Day and Valentine’s Day 2026.

The ‘Stacks of Love’ pancake race will run on Saturday 14th February and will feature themed crafts and games for all ages and a crêpe stall. Ginny Adams of local theatre company Rare Species will act as compère for the day.

At ten-minute ‘waves’ throughout the event, six pancake race contestants will set off from the Blue Boar and race up to the Boyle Cross, flipping their (fabric) pancakes as they go, in heart-shaped frying pans. There will be themed waves for runners aiming for a pancake race personal best, children, grandparents and some ‘open’ categories. For those not keen on running, there will be static pancake-tossing competitions at the Boyle Cross.

  • Frome teen’s sponsored litter picks for Arctic trip

A teenager in Frome has been litter picking around the town to raise funds for an Arctic expedition in Finland this year.

Iris Errington-Deamer, aged 14, is due to embark on their first trip away without family on a week-long expedition to Finland with a group of 20 other home-educated young people aged 11 to 15.

To raise funds, Iris has been litter picking in the community and is asking residents to sponsor them in their efforts.

“I don’t want any animals to get injured by litter and it looks horrible,” said Iris. “I’m going to go out every week in Frome.

“I am feeling nervous about the trip but I’m excited to learn things I’ve always been interested in but not had the opportunity to do, like ice fishing, husky sledding and bushcraft survival skills like building snow shelters."

  • Somerset Council to spend nearly £2.2m by 2029 looking after trees

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset Council will spend nearly £2.2m over the next four years looking after the county’s trees including ongoing efforts to combat ash dieback.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Highways Act 1980, the council has a legal duty to ensure that trees within its care (e.g. those on public roads and in parks) do not “pose an unacceptable risk to the public”.

The council has now awarded a new four-year contract to carry out necessary maintenance and reactive work at an estimated cost of £675,000 a year – the equivalent of £2,190,000 over the lifetime of the contract.

The contract will include additional work to combat ash dieback, which is now “widespread” across the county and requires significant intervention to prevent the disease from spreading further.

Paul Sweetman, the council’s service manager for highway risk, said, “We are responsible for the management of a large and diverse tree stock across our land holdings, including along highways, in parks, schools, and on other public properties. "
