Frome’s ukulele group, The Frukes, performed in Germany as part of celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of Murrhardt’s town band.
A total of 17 members of the group travelled to Murrhardt, Frome’s partner town in Germany, where they performed at the anniversary music festival and celebrated the partnership between the two towns.
The event also brought together Frome’s other partner towns, including Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne in France, Pieve di Soligo in Italy and Rabka-Zdrój in Poland, alongside a delegation from Ukraine.
Chair of the Frukes, Sue Marshall, said, “What a privilege it was and what a warm welcome we were given at this very special event.
“The highlight of the trip had to be our performance in the town square on Friday night and although we were somewhat different to the other bands, we seemed to go down a storm, with the audience singing and dancing to our songs.
“We were delighted to lead the dancing late into the night and were thanked by the officials for ‘getting Murrhardt dancing’.”
Sue said the trip also provided an opportunity to learn more about the other towns involved in the partnership.
“One of the coolest things I saw was a signpost in Murrhardt saying ‘Frome 649 miles’, together with all the other distances to the twin towns.
“We made lots of new friends and learned about the other towns in the twinning partnership. It was a very special experience, especially listening to the Ukraine delegation and how the war in Ukraine has affected their town.”
Sue thanked Philip Campagna, the councillor responsible for partnerships and cooperation, for helping the group take part in the event.
She added, “Hats off to all those who keep the Frome’s partnerships going – links like these are even more important and special in challenging global times.”
The Frukes will perform at a fundraiser at the Silk Mill on Friday 4th September, raising money for The Blue House and We Hear You (WHY). Details of forthcoming gigs can be found on the group’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/Fromeukuleleclub
