Sat. 23rd March. Wadworth 6x Southern South Frome 1st 37 10 Grove RFC.
“We were a little sleepy and sloppy in the early stages, and generally lacked our normal energy and aggression, particularly in possession,” reports head coach, Toby Culff.
“However, Grove barely got into our half throughout the first 40 mins and we were utterly dominant. The frustration was that we were unable to translate our advantage into points. Restart errors, dropped passes and turnovers at the breakdown cost us dearly at key moments and prevented us from achieving any sustained momentum. However, a fantastic length-of-the-field try and some powerful carries from forwards and backs, particularly the eventual man of the match, Calum Bonallo, improved the mood just before half time.
“A 10-0 lead at the break felt like a poor return for our comprehensive ascendancy, but we started the second period with much better accuracy and intensity, and the three substitutes brought fresh impetus. Before long, we were 23-0 ahead and in total control. The error level was still too high but there were also some tremendous spells of play, with great continuity and interplay between backs and forwards. Our half backs, Luc Thomas and Si Westlake, set a high tempo and kept us on the front foot. To their credit, Grove rallied in the final quarter and we were disappointed to concede two late tries to match the two of our own. The 37-10 final score was satisfying and hard-earned. Grove are a physical and capable side, and to comprehensively beat them twice this year is a notable achievement. We’re targeting two more wins in our final two fixtures, and are looking forward to a crucial promotion playoff at home on April 27th. Can all Frome RFC supporters please put that date in their diaries: we would really appreciate and value your support.”
Man of the Match, sponsored by The Old Bath Arms, went to Calum Bonallo.
