The presentation evening for the 29th Annual Lions Club of Frome Charity Swim took place at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Hall, on Friday 9th May.
The Annual Charity Swim is about the effort of many in getting teams of six together to swim, to then gain sponsors, and then to raise much needed funds for worthy causes. This year’s total of just over £5000 has been raised, by swimming a combined large distance of 31.8 miles. This gives the massive total in the 29 years of the Lions Swim of £201,479. The money raised was split 50/50 between the swimming teams’ cause and the Frome Lions.
Lions president Frank Collins presented the cheques to the teams who took part. He also presented trophies to a few outstanding teams. Evan’s Eels were presented a cup for the most laps swam, 65, and they swam to raise money for pancreatic cancer research in memory of a mum who died two years ago.
The most lengths swum by a non-swimming club team were The Frome Collegians 1 who swam 58. Their half of the money they raised went to their own club funds for an overseas football tour.
The most sponsorship raised was The Past Presidents team who raised £1299 for Mells Nursery for some playground climbing equipment in memory of two pupils who sadly are no long with us.
The most laps swum by a team 11 years and under was Upton Noble Tuna’s who managed 54, who raised money for PTA funds.
The John Barrow Cup for the best performing school chosen by the president was Selwood Academy. They raised £201.25 helping towards their total of £5000 for a science and technology project bringing the Bloodhound supersonic car to their school to inspire the next generation of scientists.
The Gerald Williams Cup was given to the organisation that raised the most funds was Upton Noble School for collecting £943.40.
The Lions Club congratulates all and every one of the teams for supporting this great event in the spirit of fun and charity.
Lions David Naish and Lion president Frank Collins both acknowledged with gratitude the generosity of the sponsors, Aggregate Industries for covering the costs, the Frome Leisure Centre for the venue and the Frome Medical Practice for providing medical cover; also, Mike Smith for helping with the preparation of St Mary’s Hall and the Lions ladies for providing light refreshments.
