FROME will host events in July and November to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One – and organisers want to hear from anyone who wants to get involved.
The three service associations in Frome; the Royal British Legion, the Royal Naval Association and the Royal Air Force Association, are organising events to remember the men on the town war memorial.
On behalf of the three service associations, Dr James Clipson said, “The main event will be held in November. This will be a Garden of Remembrance to be placed in the foyer of the Memorial Theatre, containing 224 crosses with the names of the men on the war memorial – there will be space for members of the public to plant and if wished, name crosses.
“Each weekday in November at 11am some 10 to 12 names from the war memorial will be read out – this will begin on Thursday 1st November and complete on Friday 30th November.
“All activities associated with Remembrance Day on Sunday 11th November, will continue as normal and the 100 years will add a significant poignancy to the event.
“Preparation for the Garden of Remembrance is well advanced and in addition to the garden and the crosses, there will be a Remembrance album with a photograph of each man’s grave, for relatives and members of the public to read.
“A related event to open during the Frome Festival in early July will be a commemorative walk linking the churchyards containing the 35 men buried in Frome that are on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission list of war dead.
“This will be a self-guided walk with brochures available at various points around the town. I will be in touch with the various contacts over the next few months – please note that I simply need to locate the appropriate graves and place suitable markers during June.”
