Greens call for fair funding to Somerset from government

THE Green Party group at Somerset Council is calling on the government to allocate more funds to the council so it can keep on top of the services it maintains in the county.

In a joint statement by cllr Martin Dimery, cllr Dave Mansell, cllr Helen Kay, cllr Michael Dunk and cllr Shane Collins, the Greens say that Somerset Council has been faced with 13 years of “draconian cuts” in funding from central government.

The statement reads, “It is little surprise that Somerset Council is now facing a desperate and deepening financial crisis, with a real possibility of soon going bust. To begin with, the formula used for central government funding of councils is long out of date and needs completely overhauling.

“Somerset has a large population of over 580,000 people spread across a wide geographical area. It has a larger than average number of retired people, putting a strain on the adult services budget. Children’s services have the additional demands of maintaining rural schools and providing transport for those who travel substantial distances to schools and colleges. These two services account for two-thirds of the council’s revenue budget. In addition, Somerset manages an enormous network of rural highways.

“Over the last 13 years of Conservative government, Somerset’s previous county and district councils have faced draconian cuts in funding from central government. With restrictive regulations on how much the council tax can be increased, the former county council has previously embarked on a succession of ‘savings’ in recent years, creating ever more pressure on staff and resources.

“Inevitably, a blame game has begun. The Liberal Democrats point out that under previous Conservative administrations, Somerset County Council chose to freeze council taxes rather than acknowledging the long-term pressures. The Tories point to the current Liberal Democrat executive having ‘lost opportunities’ presented by the abolition of district councils and the creation of unitary.

“The truth is that local councils have borne the brunt of 13 years of the Conservative government’s obsession with austerity. Furthermore, it should not be forgotten that the Liberal Democrats were complicit in promoting this policy when in Cameron’s coalition. Neither can the Liberal Democrats escape the fact that, under their control, some district councils made some ill-advised investments, now the responsibility of the new unitary council.

“The result is that we are now seeing Somerset Council desperately seeking to off-load properties and asking parish and town councils to relieve them of essential services like street cleaning.

“All of this amounts to ‘a quick fix’ in the desperate hope of staving off the Section 114 ‘bankruptcy’ order. The longer-term solution to what is becoming a national crisis is to follow the Green Party policy of placing higher taxes on those who can most afford it: the oil companies, the banks, the off-shore investors and those who grow increasingly rich while ordinary people struggle.

“Our public services are on the point of collapse. Austerity is not the solution. There is nothing left to cut. The central government which encouraged Somerset to become a single council, now needs to step in with extra resources to enable Somerset not to fail at the first hurdle.”

  • Cycling workshop to help women ‘get back on the saddle’

A workshop to help women rediscover cycling or try it for the first time is set to run on International Women’s Day.

‘Back on the Saddle’, is being hosted by Frome Community Bike Project and will be a relaxed, drop-in session taking place on Sunday 8th March from 10am to 1pm at the workshop at Station Approach.

Led by experienced female volunteers, the event aims to be relaxed, encouraging and judgement-free.

Organisers say, “It will be focused on building confidence, sharing information and meeting others in a welcoming environment.

“Whether your bike’s been gathering dust or you’re feeling a bit nervous about getting started, you’ll learn how to give your bike a simple safety check, get tips on safer, quieter routes around Frome and have the chance to meet new cycling buddies. You don’t need to have a bike to take part, just come and find out about Frome Community Bike Project and ask anything cycling-related."

  • Disco fun run for cancer charity

A disco fun run to raise money for cancer counselling charity We Hear You (WHY) will take place on Thursday 12th March.

The event is organised by local mother and son duo Rose Hiron-Grimes and Keinan Cooper, who are running the London Marathon this year for WHY.

Participants will meet at The Crown Inn at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. The 5km flat route will see local DJ collective BassBeatz turn the streets of Keyford into a moving dance floor. DJ Lloydy will lead the run on his custom-built music bike, providing a disco soundtrack to dance, run, wheel, or walk along the route. There is a suggested donation of £10, which includes glow-in-the-dark accessories.

Rose and Keinan have both seen friends benefit from WHY’s professional counselling and have experienced the impact of cancer bereavements themselves. Earlier this year, WHY launched an urgent fundraising appeal to raise £55,000 by the end of March to avoid closure.

  • Screening to honour acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker

Film fans in Keyford are holding a special event on 5th March to mark the death of Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr, who died in January.

Organiser Simon Keyes said, “Werckmeister Harmonies traces the collapse of the social order in a remote Hungarian town following the arrival of a sinister circus featuring a giant whale.

“Renowned as a pioneer of ‘slow cinema’, his films are characterised by long takes, elaborate camera movements and stark black-and-white cinematography. They include The Turin Horse and the seven-and-a-half-hour masterpiece Sátántangó. Keyford Kino will be screening his award-winning film Werckmeister Harmonies (2000)."

  • Fate of 1,700 Frome homes to be settled around Easter

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

The fate of a planned development of 1,700 new homes in Frome will be settled around Easter, the Planning Inspectorate has confirmed.

The Selwood Garden Community (SGC) envisions the creation of new homes on agricultural land between the B3090 Marston Lane and the busy A361, along with commercial space, two care homes, a local centre (which shops and a possible medical centre), a primary school and a range of public open spaces and sports facilities.

A public inquiry into the plans was held in Shepton Mallet in early-August 2025, with planning inspector Stephen Normington hearing from multiple local and professional witnesses and undertaking an official site visit.

Eight months on from this hearing, the Planning Inspectorate has confirmed that Stephen Normington’s report has been formally submitted to housing secretary Steve Reed MP – with a final decision expected by early-April.

The Grief Opera, written and composed by Nigel Linacre and Vladimir Miller, will shine a spotlight on suicide, the most common cause of death in young men.
