THE recent appearance of graffiti on Catherine Hill has sparked rumours that mysterious British street artist, Bansky, has visited the town.
Last week, the image of a falling man, below the slogan ‘Love is metaphysical gravity’ was stenciled on to the wall in the alley next to craft shop Owl, using Banky’s distinctive stenciling technique.
Local resident Jane Saxon, told Frome Times, “This area of Catherine Hill has long had this thought provoking, or idiotic, depending on your ‘take’ on things, odd bit of painted graffiti. It’s on the wall by ‘Owl’ and opposite ‘Bramble and Wild’. It says, “Love is metaphysical gravity.”
“It’s been painted over at least twice, as the ‘host’ building has been sold, and smartly repainted. It’s been photographed and turned into a postcard to raise funds for the WHY Gallery in Stony Street. However this week it has reappeared in tidy stencilled letters with a charming ‘graphic’ of a man falling. It’s very ‘Banksy’ in style and wit, but could of course be a ‘spoof’. I expect the mysterious artist himself may want to confirm or deny any involvement. It’s a ‘homage’ in any case, and I hope it makes Frome residents smile.”
Bansky was approached for comment, but had not responded by the time the paper went to print.
