Hat-trick puts Robins in next round of FA Cup

Sat. 12th Sept. FA Cup Preliminary Round Frome Town 3 Bodmin

Kane Simpson’s hat-trick secured a 3-0 victory over Bodmin Town and their place in the First Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

This was The Robins’ first win in the competition in several years, and the first during Danny Greaves’ tenure as boss at The Robins’ Nest.

The Robins nearly took the lead within seven minutes as Rex Mannings evaded the Cornish side’s defence, but his close-range strike was palmed away by the visiting ‘keeper.

Matt Smith and Jon Davies would also have their chance to sting the palms of the visiting ‘keeper as the host started to put pressure on the South West Peninsula League side.

The deadlock would be broken by a mix-up in the Cornish defence as pressure from Simpson led to the ‘keeper planting the ball onto the forward’s foot, who has been prolific in pre-season, with six goals.

It had been a lively first ten minutes in the second half, with several frank and tetchy exchanges between the two sides.

Simpson grabbed his second of the afternoon as he turned Jon Davies’ cross home from close-range.

The striker completed his hat-trick after he rounded the visiting ‘keeper and slotted the ball home, to give The Robins an unassailable lead and a place in the next round of the FA Cup!

Team: Carey, Witcombe (Ollis 71′), Teale (c), Maidment, Hallett, O’Loughlin, Smith, Monks (Peck 71’), Davies, Mannings (Davis ’78), Simpson. Not used: Locke, Mapstone.

  • Frome dog accessory business launches Laura Ashley collection

A Frome-based business specialising in premium dog walking accessories has signed a partnership with British heritage brand Laura Ashley.

The aDoraBle Pooch Company sells dog walking accessories with hand-painted designs created in-house at its office, warehouse and retail store on Commerce Park. It recently launched a collection designed in collaboration with Laura Ashley, available to buy from its Frome store.

The new collection features various Laura Ashley prints on some of their dog walking products, including harnesses with a discreet pocket to safely house an Apple AirTag or similar tracking device, waterproof leads and coordinated dog blankets.

Co-founders Brad and Kayla said this was an ‘exciting milestone’ for the business.

Brad said, “This partnership represents a significant achievement for our small independent business, bringing together a heritage British brand with our locally designed and produced pet accessories.”

  • Acoustic tribute to Joni Mitchell at Cheese and Grain

An intimate acoustic tribute to the music of Joni Mitchell is coming to Frome on 17th April.

The show, ‘This Flight Tonight – the Songs of Joni Mitchell’, will be presented by a five-piece band.

Organisers say, “Established in early 2023, acclaimed songwriters Zervas and Pepper present the show, featuring songs such as ‘California’, ‘Blue’, ‘Woodstock’ ‘Both Sides Now’, ‘Carey’, ‘Coyote’, ‘A Case Of You’, and many more.

“Joni Mitchell is one of the most influential artists of the modern age, rising to stardom in the late 1960s; her music and songwriting is the jewel in the crown of the Woodstock generation. Bursting onto the scene with a sound entirely her own, Joni earned the respect of her musical peers and the love of her audiences worldwide."

  • Frome Drama Club to stage first 80th anniversary show

A local drama group is set to celebrate its 80th anniversary with an upcoming play in April.

Frome Drama will perform Jack Absolute Flies Again from 16th to 18th April at the Merlin Theatre. The performance will be the first of three plays marking the group’s 80th anniversary.

Organisers say, “Written by Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors) and Oliver Chris, this is a completely hilarious farce set in 1940 at RAF Fontwell during the Battle of Britain. The play is very loosely based on Sheridan’s The Rivals, and features many of the same characters, notably the world-famous Mrs Malaprop, whose mangled verbiage spawned the phrase malapropism. But this version is faster, ruder, funnier and altogether very different from the original.”

The show is recommended for ages 14+. Organisers say, “Come along and support local people in local theatre and keep theatre alive.”

  • Drive-thru outlets planned near Frome

Two drive-thru units, including a coffee shop and a restaurant, along with a petrol station, shop and dog park could be built near Frome.

A planning application has been submitted to Somerset Council by Warleigh Capital, Spectrum Southern Ltd and White Row Country Foods Ltd. It seeks permission to develop approximately 2.55 hectares of currently undeveloped land to the south of Old Warminster Road at White Row Farm. The site is just off the A36, with access to Frome via the White Row Farm roundabout onto the A361.

The developer says the scheme will create 45 jobs and provide an “accessible local service for the local community”, including space for a dog park.

The development would also include an EV charging hub and 70 parking spaces.

  • Record number of teams take part in Clive Lewis Tag Rugby Festival

Young players from across the area took part in the annual Clive Lewis Schools Tag Festival, hosted by Frome Rugby Club last week.

The popular event, played in honour of the late Clive Lewis, a much-loved Frome RFC club legend and local schoolteacher, welcomed the largest number of teams in two decades, with 12 teams taking part. 129 tries were scored in 20 eight-minute games.

“This festival is often the first experience these children have of any competitive activity with other schools,” said Neil Warnock from Frome Rugby Club. “The evidence was clear – they embraced it and had a great time, which is exactly what it’s all about.”

In the Years 5 and 6 competition, Selwood’s three teams – the Bears, Wolves and Leopards – put on an outstanding display, scoring 40 tries between them and each topping their respective pools. Westbury Leigh matched the Leopards in Pool C, while the final between Selwood’s Bears and Wolves ended in a thrilling 3–3 draw.

  • Frome residents gear up for London Marathon

Frome residents are preparing to take on the London Marathon, running 26 miles across the city to raise funds for various charities.

Callum Green, Rose Hiron-Grimes, Keinan Cooper and Anna Cooper are among the residents who have been fundraising and training for the gruelling challenge taking place on 26th April.

Callum Green is raising funds for The Lullaby Trust, an infant support charity working to prevent unexpected deaths in infancy and support infant health; Rose Hiron-Grimes and Keinan Cooper, a mother and son duo, are running to raise funds for We Hear You (WHY) to support the cancer counselling charity’s urgent fundraising appeal; and Anna Cooper is running for Mind, in memory of her 22-year-old friend Teilo How, who died by suicide.

Anna Cooper, who is a practice manager at Eyetech Opticians, said, “This will be one of the biggest challenges of my life, but I think of Teilo all the time when I’m running and that keeps me going. If I can turn this effort into something positive – into hope, help and change – then every step will be worth it.”

  • Carnival to return in September after risk of cancellation

Frome Carnival will go ahead this year with an evening-only procession after facing cancellation due to a shortage of volunteers and fundraising challenges.

The carnival committee said it has been struggling in recent years, both financially and physically, with not enough people coming forward to help organise the annual event and fundraise in the run-up.

Thanks to a community grant of £1,000 from Frome Town Council, the carnival will still go ahead with an evening-only procession on Saturday 26th September.

The event is an annual staple of the town’s calendar and costs around £20,000 to run.

The children’s procession will not take place this year, but organisers hope it will return in 2027 for the Carnival’s centenary year. Instead, the committee plans a children’s fancy dress competition at this year’s fun day in the park on Saturday 6th June.
