Heart screening sessions held for young people

CRY heart screening sessions were recently held at Oakfield Academy in Frome.

This event was funded by The Julian Memorial Fund that is held with CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and 93 young people between the ages of 14 – 35 were screened for hidden heart problems.

  • Frome Show promises packed day of family fun The Frome Agricultural & Cheese Show returns on Saturday 12th September, promising a packed day of food, farming and, of course, cheese! The Show proudly hosts the internationally renowned Global Cheese Awards, attracting entries from around the world. In the Cheese Pavilion, visitors can view award-winning cheeses, meet cheesemakers, shop from a mouth-watering selection, and even take home some of the Champion Cheeses at the famous Cheese Auction. “It’s a true paradise for cheese lovers!” said Charlotte O’Neill, Showground Development & Competitions Manager. “New for 2026, the Village Green welcomes the thrilling Paul Hannam’s ATV Stunt Show. Expect jaw-dropping tricks, precision riding and gravity-defying stunts as Paul pushes his skills to the limit in a high-energy display guaranteed to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Help shape future travel and transport in Frome The community is invited to help shape a new plan that will influence future transport and connectivity priorities across the area. The Frome Area Movement and Place Plan, being developed by Frome Town Council in partnership with Somerset Council and neighbouring parishes, will explore how people travel around Frome and the wider area and how access to jobs, education, healthcare, shops, services and leisure opportunities can be improved. The plan will consider a range of topics, including walking, cycling, public transport, road safety, accessibility, parking and links between nearby villages and towns. Frome Town Council is keen to hear from a wide range of people, whether you regularly walk into town, commute by car, catch the bus, cycle to work or rely on mobility aids to get around. Local businesses and employers are also encouraged to take part, helping to highlight any challenges such as staff travel, customer access, deliveries and connections across the local area.   • Local footpath enhanced by quarry company A long-distance footpath connecting to Frome has been enhanced through a donation from a local quarry. The East Mendip Way runs from the Bishop’s Palace in Wells through the northern edge of Shepton Mallet (intersecting with the Windsor Hill Greenway), all the way to Frome town centre. A crucial spur from the route, which runs along the Egford Brook in the Vallis Vale west of Frome, was recently closed off to the public to allow repairs to be undertaken. This path has now reopened after being resurfaced by Heidelberg Materials, using materials from its nearby Whatley Quarry – with additional enhancements being made to increase biodiversity and improve the experience for dog-walkers.   • Frome-made gin goes on sale at Givino A local wine shop in Frome has begun distilling its own gin. Givino, based on Commerce Park, has launched its own range of small-batch gins, starting with Rhubarb and Ginger. Run by Robbie and Jamie Lymer, Givino will specialise on producing small batches of around 8-10 bottles each month using seasonal ingredients. “We have spent a long time focusing on the wine side of the business, but as we are Givino (gin and vino) we thought it was about time that we focused on the gin now!” said Robbie. “It’s great that we have such a strong local customer base and the feedback has been amazing with our first batch selling out in five days! “Every month will be a different recipe to reflect the seasonal botanicals. We will be using locally grown produce as much as we can; for example the rhubarb came from my parents’ garden and next month we will be making an apple and blackberry gin, so we will be off blackberry picking soon!” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Frome Walking Festival attracts over 200 walkers Frome
  • Film crew capture Frome by foot and bike A new video is being produced to showcase how visitors can explore Frome on foot and by bike after arriving in the town by train. The online video, Frome on Foot and Bike, is being produced by the South Wessex Community Rail Partnership with support from Great Western Railway. A film crew visited Frome on Monday 3rd August to capture footage for the video, starting at Frome railway station before hiring bikes from the Bike Project near the station. The crew filmed along the cycle route, passing Rodden Meadow and heading into the town centre, as well as capturing footage along the riverbank around Welshmill, Catherine Hill and Vicarage Street.   • Somerset Solidarity Day returns to Frome An event bringing together trade union members, climate campaigners and community groups is coming to the Cheese and Grain. Somerset Solidarity Day will take place on Sunday 18th October from 12pm, with organisers encouraging interested stallholders to get in touch. They say, “Somerset Solidarity Day is for all local people who are interested in finding out how joining a trade union can help them, or what radical campaign is just for them. We will bring together, under one roof, 30+ stalls, featuring individual trade unions, progressive campaign groups of all kinds and community charities.   • From The Mayor I hope you are all continuing to enjoy this unprecedented fine spell of weather and are making the most of the opportunity to explore Frome’s open spaces. Please be cautious and help us to look after these spaces by not lighting fires, BBQs or disposable BBQs and taking extra care with anything that could start a fire. I walked around some of the fields around the town during the eclipse and it was great to see so many of you out celebrating this once-in-a-generation phenomenon. I was lucky to have a pair of the special glasses but I was impressed with the variety of viewing aids some of you were using, from homemade pinhole cameras to welding masks and colanders. The sun shone too on the Frome Carnival Fun Day in Victoria Park; I enjoyed meeting so many of you, especially those on the stalls representing our local charities. I hope you raised some much-needed cash as well as promoting the good work I know you do. I look forward to coming to see those who invited me to visit your organisations so I can have a more detailed insight into your aims and achievements.   • New rules could mean fewer housing plans decided by councillors By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby with additional reporting by Frome Times Fewer decisions on major housing plans could be taken by councillors after October following changes in UK planning law. The Labour government has been making numerous changes to national planning policy as part of its pledge to deliver 1.5 million homes by the end of the current parliament. The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) announced in early-June that it would be making changes to the ‘national scheme of delegation’ - a set of rules which governs which planning applications can come to public committee meetings. These changes come into effect in Somerset on 31st October and may make it harder for large developments to be decided in public, especially where outline planning permission is already in place.
