A baby hedgehog, which was found in the Frome College garden trapped in a drainpipe, was rescued by Dan McNicol in Year 9 during a ‘Grow it’ lesson.
Tracey Eames, senior teaching assistant, managed to free the trapped hedgehog but feared the worst.
The college reports, “To everyone’s surprise, although very weak, he was alive. Staff wrapped him in a towel and placed him in a warm box, and took the baby to Bellevue Veterinary Clinic in Trudoxhill to be cared for.
“On arriving at the vets with little hope of surviving and weighing only 167g, we are delighted to report that he is now already 213g and is very actively making great progress!
“The hedgehog has been named Dan after his rescuer and will be moved to Prickles Hedgehog Rescue in Cheddar for the winter. All being well, Dan the hedgehog will continue to thrive, and we will welcome him back to our garden at Frome College in the spring.
“We would like to thank Bellevue Veterinary Clinic for their very generous support and care services which they kindly gave free of charge.”
