Edventure’s upcoming start-up course is a challenge to start up an initiative inspired by The Frome Men’s Shed – but for young adults.
Men’s Sheds are community spaces for men to connect, converse and create. The activities are often similar to those of garden sheds, but for people to enjoy together. They help reduce loneliness and isolation, but most importantly, they’re fun. It’s no secret that both the Men’s and Women’s Sheds in Frome are thriving, and their success has been the inspiration to set up an equivalent for young adults.
Patrick Abrahams, chair of the Frome Shed says, “The Men’s Shed is approached on a regular basis by young people who want to have workshop experience and we think this initiative will be great.”
Through this challenge, Edventure students will have the opportunity to experience all the stages of setting up a social enterprise – from market research to business planning, branding to actual launch – all as part of a team.
Many Start-Up students go on to start up their own social enterprises and/or find work in charities and the social sector. In fact, Edventure’s mission is, “to support young people to step towards a livelihood that matters to them.
Several of the social, sustainable initiatives in Frome were started by students on Edventure: Frome’s Start-Up Courses for example The SHARE Shop, The Community Fridge, The Welsh Mill Hub, Remakery: Frome and The Frome Wardrobe Collective.
Edventure Start-Up is a 10-week course for 18 – 35 year olds. It is not like anything you’ve done at school – students become part of a team who actually start up an enterprise in response to a local challenge.
Applications are now open for the Frome Shed for young people challenge. If you’re aged 18 – 35 and up for a challenge (or know anyone who is), please find more details and apply at edventurefrome.org/courses/edventure/. If you’d like to be involved in this project in other ways, please email info@edventurefrome.org.
