Horse racing fundraiser for boxing club

A FUNDRAISING ‘Cheltenham preview’ evening to raise money for Frome Amateur Boxing Club is being held at Frome Town Football Club on Wednesday 6th March at 6.30pm. 

Paul Starr hosts legends Martin Pipe CBE, Harry Cobden and Jo Tizzard as well as TV’s ‘Belly from the Telly’ Gary Wiltshire for an evening of horse racing before the prestigious Cheltenham Races. 

The event is supported by Kevin Corcoran carpets and vinyls, Paul Starr darts, Star Sports and Frome Town Football Club. 

VIP tickets are £30, which includes meet and greet, food, best reserved seating with waitress service. Standard tickets are £15. To book contact Paul on 07917 442054 or Frome Town Football Club on 01373 464087.

  • Frome Business Innovators forum launches next month A new collaborative business forum, Frome Business Innnovators (FBI), is launching next month to bring local businesses together. Launching on Thursday 6th March from 9am to 10.30am at Frome Town Hall, the forum aims to bring local businesses together in a friendly, open environment. Organiser Paul Cranwell said, “This isn’t your average networking event, it’s a chance to collaborate, share ideas and tackle challenges together in true Frome style. “Thanks to support from Frome Town Council, this free event is all about bringing local businesses together in a friendly, open environment to help each other grow, thrive and navigate the unique challenges of running a business today.” Read more on our website.   • Pop-up community canteen throws back to Frome’s war-time British Restaurant Frome Food Networks’ Pay-What-You-Can community restaurant, Canteen, returns this month following two successful pop-ups last year. The last two Canteen pop-ups in October and November 2024 were at Trinity Hall and saw 128 meals served at the first event and 136 at the second with an average of 40 free meals supplied over both sessions.   • New basketball club launches in Frome Basketball lovers in Frome now have a place to play, thanks to the launch of a brand-new club at Frome Sport & Fitness. Open to both men and women, this friendly and inclusive group welcomes all abilities and plays every Thursday from 7pm to 9pm, offering a great opportunity for anyone looking to get involved in the sport. Designed to support the local basketball community and build interest in the sport, the sessions are completely flexible, there is no pressure to commit and players can drop in whenever they like. A member of the group, Ryan Todd, said, “Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned player, the club provides a welcoming space to develop skills and enjoy the game.” Each session costs £8 for two hours and there is no need to sign up in advance; simply turn up on a Thursday evening and you can be added to the group.   • Work begins for a new zebra crossing on The Butts Work is due to begin on The Butts and Butts Hill to install a new zebra crossing near the junction of Water Lane and Somerset Road. The improvements form part of the Safer School Streets/Quiet Way scheme, a central government-funded project implemented by Somerset Council, active travel charity Sustrans and Frome Town Council. Local signage is in place indicating the closure of Somerset Road between The Butts and Whitewell Road from Monday 17th February to Saturday 5th April.   • Million Women March to call for better child protection A peaceful march is set to take place in Frome this month to raise awareness of the need to protect children from abuse. As part of a national, non-political movement with marches taking place across the country, the Million Women March will be held in Frome on Monday 17th February, starting at 12pm at the war memorial outside the Memorial Theatre. The march will then set off at 1pm, proceeding to the Westway Precinct, or the seating area outside the library, depending on the number of participants. Read more on our website.   • Local MP makes emotional plea to Parliament on road safety for young people Local MP Anna Sabine has called for ‘serious consideration’ to be given to new measures for road safety and young drivers in an emotional plea to Parliament. Speaking in Westminster recently, the MP highlighted her ‘really serious concerns’ about road safety and the need for more preventative measures, such as graduated driving licences - licences that place restrictions on new drivers to help them gain experience in safer conditions. Referencing the dangers of roads around Frome and East Somerset, and the many incidents that have led to fatalities, she also spoke of the need to introduce minimum learning periods for new drivers and to reduce the number of passengers a young person can have in the car.
