Members of the Frome Selwood Horticulture Society defied the elements in the downpour of Bank Holiday Monday to ensure residents and visitors experience a colourful floral welcome at the top of North Parade.
Over 500 bedding plants will give a splash of rainbow colour; nothing like the soaking however that the stalwart gardeners experienced as they ploughed on, expecting the weather to pass. Kind drivers’ perped horns, either in encouragement or sympathy. Under the keen eye and instruction of the Chairman Ray Carver, past head of amenities gardening in Frome, a lesson was received in the art of lines and curves.
This is the second year that the Town Council has invited the Society to plant the large flower bed at the strategic location on North Parade. Plants were supplied by Minties, funded by the council and will be overseen by the Society and Council, all with the aim to encourage community participation.
The Frome Selwood Horticulture Society (FSHS) is very much part of that culture. It provided a successful morning for Frome on 20th May, with thanks to Selwood Academy, when the Society held its Annual Plant Sale. The same venue will see the FSHS Annual Flower and Produce Show on 26th August 2017.
The FSHS meets on the second Tuesday in the month at 7.30pm at Critchill School. Details are posted on the Discover Frome website and are in the diary dates of the local press. Informative speakers share their expertise in good company, and always with a cup of tea and raffle, funds from which keep membership down to just £6 a year, with discounted coach trips.
Whether you are a keen gardener or will prefer simply to admire the plants as they grow into a floral display on North Parade, come to see what the FSHS has to offer. As clubs go, this one is growing. More details from Jane Norris 0777 620 8531 / jane.norris9@gmail.com
