Humans of Frome-Mark Bruce by Ciara Nolan

As a kid in London, Mark Bruce harboured dreams of being a graphic novelist.

He liked to create and tell stories through his art.  His father, Christopher Bruce, the world-renowned choreographer and his mother, artist and dancer Marian Bruce, were happy to encourage their son in his own artistic endeavours.

At the age of 17 however, Mark finally realised that the environment that he had been immersed in his whole life was less of a backdrop to his childhood and more a part of his DNA and he began training to dance.  His childhood had provided a rich seam of creative energies, and gifted artists and performers moved in and out of his everyday existence; the thought of leaving that behind was unsettling to say the least.  He trained at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance and after graduating in 1989, he pursued a career as a dancer and choreographer, working and living in the UK and abroad.

In 1990 he formed the Mark Bruce Company, an ambitious move for a young man, but he knew from very early on that he wanted to develop a choreographic voice and theatrical style of work that would require time, and a foundation entirely under his control. Many Mark Bruce Company productions followed, seeing the company growing to the substantial scale that it is today.

14 years ago another bold move was undertaken.  Frome, long on his radar (due to his parents settling in Witham Friary) beckoned. This small market town’s location felt far enough away from the frenetic existence of London, yet situated close enough to everything to still be able to work.

His young family, wife Eleanor Duval (a dancer and assistant director of the Mark Bruce Company) and their then baby son, Jack, started their life in a town on the verge of change. What followed was a period of growth, both to the family (now 3 children, 2 of whom are following in the family’s dance tradition) and the company, which following production after production, grew in popularity and size.

At one point Mark explains that three shipping containers at the back of the train station, filled with costumes, props and sets was the company’s home, along with a transient existence across Frome’s venues from the Bennet to The HubNub Centre and Saint John’s First School.

Having achieved a number of notable awards including the Sky Arts South Bank Award for Dance, the National Dance Award for Best Male Dancer for Jonathan Goddard as Dracula, and the award for Best Independent Company, it was time to invest in a more permanent home.

Today, Mark Bruce Company has a fresh new home in Frome, complete with a fit-for-purpose sprung floor, the airy space is alive with activity on the day that I visit, and the company in full rehearsal mode for their forthcoming production of Macbeth.  Macbeth, follows on from ‘The Odyssey’ 2016, and ‘Dracula’ in 2013/14. Productions prior to these all made in Frome include ‘Made in Heaven’ ‘Love and War’ and ‘Sea of Bones,’ all of which are fearless in their approach to the dark side.  I ask Mark about his willingness to deal with such subject matter.

“There is a darkness in everything, there is a darkness in being human,” he says. “My work is not nihilistic in any way, I always look for the hope in things. I think it’s a real problem that there’s always a momentum to deny what we are; we should look and try and understand, come to terms with it. If you shove it in a box, it becomes a monster.”

The soundtrack for Macbeth will be provided by pieces by Arvo Part and judging by the boldness of previous musical choices for Mark’s productions, it is not surprising to find a wildcard Sonic Youth track making an appearance either. Mixing musical genres is not something that Mark shies away from, much like his other artistic choices.

When I ask him about his music selections he replies, “It’s important to not have a fear of doing things, it’s like when you have dreams, there is no-one there censoring them.” He explains that he has wanted to work with Part’s music for years but feels that the time is now right, there is room for him within it, it’s music that gives him space to have a dialogue with it.

He grew up on a healthy diet of David Bowie and good old fashioned blues. Bowie was a rule breaker, something that he admires greatly, a musician and a performer, sound and vision working in perfect unison, things that run through his own bloodstream. Mark is a musician in his own right, published by Mute Song. He explains that if he didn’t play guitar he’d go mad, returning to playing blues to unwind (along with film-making and editing). He also writes; this year will see the release of his book On Choreography and Making Dance Theatre, published by Oberon.

‘Macbeth’ tours the UK, taking in a number of weeks in London’s iconic ‘Wilton’s Music Hall’.

So it would seem that Mark has achieved his childhood ambition of being a graphic novelist after all – but perhaps his early ambitions were just a little on the small size for someone who would grow up to be a polymath, capable of bringing his story-telling and narrative right off the page into a visceral and infinite world of artistic possibilities.

  • Frome residents invited to shape the nation’s future in groundbreaking civic research

A major research project is coming to Frome, and local residents are invited to help document the town’s civic life and imagine its future.

The project, called Civic Imaginaries of Frome, is a collaboration between the University of Glasgow, Frome Town Council and Edventure. Civic imaginaries are the different ways people sense, feel and dream about the futures of their places. This work is part of a four-year Civic Imaginary Partnerships study also happening in Chester, Glasgow, Hull, and Southampton.

Between November 2025 and March 2026, researchers Dr Michael Howcroft and Dr Ellen Bishop will be in Frome, running activities that explore the town’s independent culture and the ways residents connect and co-operate with each other. They’ll be carrying out interviews and workshops and will be working with Frome’s voluntary groups. Everyone in Frome over the age of 18 is invited to take part.

  • Acclaimed choreographer brings new work to Frome for 80th birthday

Famed choreographer and local resident Christopher Bruce is bringing his first new work in over a decade to Frome to celebrate his 80th birthday.

Troubadour, a dance tribute to the songwriter Leonard Cohen, can be seen at Frome Memorial Theatre on 28th and 29th November, presented by the acclaimed contemporary ballet company, Yorke Dance Project.

A long-time admirer of Leonard Cohen, Christopher was inspired to create a work to his music when he heard a recording of a live performance at the O2 Arena in 2008.

He has set it to six iconic tracks – ‘Dance Me to the End of Love’, ‘The Future’, ‘A Thousand Kisses Deep’, ‘Suzanne’, ‘Boogie Street’ and ‘First We Take Manhattan.’

  • Local Jewish resident speaks out about living in fear

A local woman has spoken out about living in fear as a Jewish resident in Frome, saying many in the town’s Jewish community have been hiding their identity amid a rise in antisemitism.

The resident, who is remaining anonymous for safety reasons, told the Frome Times she felt compelled to share her experience and support the local Jewish community. She said the rise in antisemitism has been fuelled globally by the conflict between Palestine and Israel, and emphasised that Jewish people in Frome are separate from the conflict.

“I wanted to say something about what has been the experience of people who are Jewish in Frome,” she said. “I want to call out for people to stop because whatever people might feel, we are just residents of Frome who are Jewish who want to go about our lives and join in with the community; we are not part of the conflict.”

  • Frome Festival launches fundraising campaign with special concert

Frome Festival is launching a fundraising campaign to raise £25,000 before next year’s festival, kicking off with a special concert featuring three locally based acts.

The campaign, ‘25 for 25’, celebrates a quarter of a century of the festival being at the heart of Frome’s creative community, with events throughout the year. All monies raised will support growing the organisation, developing an education strand and maintaining its programme of free and low-cost activities.

The campaign will launch on Saturday 29th November at The Tunnels with local acts including Tom Moth, folk duo māsa and a new soul/funk collective, The Juice.

Tom Moth, harpist for Florence + The Machine, said, “I enjoy crafting sounds using various acoustic and electronic devices, so whilst the harp will be involved, the performance won’t strictly be a harp recital.”

Tom, who moved to Frome a couple of years ago, said, “I love that there’s such a welcoming and proactive creative community. It seems like there’s always something happening, whether it’s a gig, an exhibition, or community-based activity.”

  • Town council votes temporary increase chair’s allowance

Councillors at Frome Town Council have voted to give the Chair Cllr Fiona Barrows a temporary rise in her monthly allowance for the next six months due to increased workload.

The £3,750 increase means Cllr Barrows will receive an additional £625 per month, which will come from general reserves, until April 2026. Councillors unanimously agreed to the rise at the full council meeting on Wednesday 29th October.

Allowance

Until May this year, no Frome town councillor had received extra income for the leader role. When Cllr Barrows became Chair of the Council, a £15,000 allowance was introduced for this year. It was introduced to cover lost earnings, as the role is estimated to require 2.5 days of work per week.

With the temporary increase, Cllr Barrows’ total allowance as Chair for the year will rise to around £18,750, reflecting the extra duties she is taking on.

The evening will finish with a Drumhead Ceremony and Act of Remembrance with standards of the Royal British Legion, Royal Naval Association and Royal Air Force Association.

On Saturday 8th November, there will be three war grave walks starting at the Memorial Theatre at 9.45am. A reading of the Roll of Honour of the fallen of World War Two will take place at the Memorial at 11am. At 2pm in the Assembly Rooms, the premiere of a series of Frome amateur archive films taken between 1939 and 1945 will be shown.

In the evening at 7pm at the Memorial Theatre, formerly known as the Grand Cinema, there will be a film showing of the epic 1942 Noël Coward film In Which We Serve. Tickets cost £5 and 1940s costume is encouraged.

The weekend will then end with the town’s annual Remembrance Parade on Sunday 9th November at 10.55am at Frome Memorial Theatre.
