Writer John Payne and photographer John Beeching are launching an exciting joint venture at Frome Library on Friday 11th November.
John Beeching will be giving an illustrated talk about The White Island – Ibiza. And making it plain that clubbing is just one of many reasons for visiting the island.
It has a fascinating history and culture and areas of intense natural beauty. He will explain how he came to live on Ibiza as a small boy, roaming the mountains and beaches of the island with local children and learning to speak their language.
“I shall also be talking about my mother’s classic memoir of Ibiza in the 1950s, ‘A Valley Wide’, written under the name Alexis Brown,” said John.
John Payne will be reading from his new book ‘Catalans and Others’. This explores why Barcelona, Valencia and the Balearic islands (Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca) are so often at one another’s throats. Despite the fact that they have a common language (Catalan) and a common history going back to the Middle Ages.
“I will also be explaining just why the Catalans are pushing hard for independence from Spain,” said John.
‘Ibiza Clubbing and the Catalans’ begins at 7.30pm and is a free event. There will be a retiring collection to cover the costs.
