Inner Wheel donates £1,000 to Dorothy House

FROME Inner Wheel has presented Dorothy House Hospice Care with a cheque for £1,000.

The charity is one of many selected by the Inner Wheel to benefit from money raised by the group throughout the year at different events and at the Rotary shop, which the group manages every Monday.

President of the group, Gill Barnes, met with Stephanie Cox, community fundraiser for Dorothy House, to hand over the cheque.

  • Health and climate project draws to a close. A project helping people live greener and healthier lives is drawing to a close in March. Green and Healthy Frome (GHF) will end as funding for the project comes to an end. It has seen a partnership between Edventure Frome, Frome Medical Practice and Frome Town Council, supporting a shift in how health, wellbeing and climate action are understood and lived in Frome. From nature-based mental health support and greener homes to reuse and repair projects, supporting local food to active travel and swapping out plastic period products for less toxic options, the project has shown what is possible when people and organisations work together in new ways. The Green and Healthy Frome team said, “Having counted 24,800 connections through the Green and Healthy Frome projects as a whole and with individual project successes like ‘Show Me Your Meds’, where the work saved the NHS £165,957 over a seven-month period and led to 5,350 fewer prescribed items, which was a savings of 96,421kg CO2e.” Read more on our website.   • Volunteers needed for tree planting at new community woodland. Volunteers are invited to take part in guided tree-planting sessions to plant 3,800 saplings at a new community woodland being created in memory of a Frome woman. The planting sessions will take place on land at Spring Gardens between Monday 2 and Sunday 8 March. The woodland is being created in memory of Frome resident and nature lover Moko Sellars, who died aged 39 in 2022. The project is supported by a crowdfunder organised by her friends and family, which raised £25,000. Frome Town Council has worked with Seed Landscape Design on planning and preparation and a 99-year lease to the land has been granted to the council free of charge by the landowners. With groundwork now complete, local residents, schools and community groups are encouraged to sign up for two-hour planting sessions throughout the week. Read more on our website.   • Window festival set to illuminate Frome streets. A festival which sees Frome’s windows illuminated with creative designs is returning for its ninth year in March. Frome Window Wanderland is back from 14th to 21st March and people are encouraged to decorate their windows with the theme of ‘hope.’ For residents feeling inspired but unsure where to begin, there is a free window-making workshop on 4th February, with additional sessions to follow. Window Wanderland is coinciding with The Good Heart’s Kindness Festival. Organiser Susie Temple said, “This year, the theme across Window Wanderlands nationwide is hope. We think that’s a perfect fit for The Kindness Festival and we’re excited to see what participants come up with. Of course you don’t have to stick to this theme, but if it sparks something for you do run with it. Either way, creating a window display of any sort to brighten the streets of Frome is a kind thing to do.” Read more on our website. The link is in our bio
  • Father thanks Frome community for celebrating son’s life. The father of Graham Gillions has thanked the people of Frome for the overwhelming turnout at a celebration of life held at the town hall on 12th January. Graham died on 3rd January at the Dorothy House Hospice, soon after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Following a small, private burial service, the council chamber in Frome Town Hall was filled to bursting with people who knew and loved Graham from many different chapters of his life, gathering to share memories, music, stories and reflections. Graham was known for his work in climate justice and his dedication to animal welfare, particularly through Keyford Hedgehog Rescue. Writing to express his gratitude, Graham’s father Steve said, “Graham loved Frome. He valued the inclusive spirit of the town and its diverse community where people from all walks of life come together and are celebrated. Read more on our website.   • Community restaurant pop-up to mark end to Frome project. A pop-up community restaurant is set to run again this month following six successful sessions over the last 15 months. Canteen, Frome Food Networks’ pay-what-you-can community restaurant, will see Frome’s best chefs dishing up more affordable and wholesome food at Trinity Hall on 6th February. The event will mark an end to the Green & Healthy Frome (GHF) project – a partnership between Frome Town Council, Edventure, and Frome Medical Practice – that helped make projects such as Canteen possible. GHF is drawing to a close in March. Canteen Co-organiser Hugh Thomas, said, “Having now served 898 meals over six pop-ups and across two locations, the idea has quite dramatically started to prove itself and that, with some tweaks, it could function to some degree without the funding that’s supported it thus far.” Read more on our website.   • Students to perform ‘Back to the 80s’ at Merlin Theatre Students at Frome College will perform their new production ‘Back to the 80s’ at Merlin Theatre this February. The show follows the trials of Corey Senior as he navigates the challenges of secondary school, set to iconic 80s songs. Performances will take place from 3rd to 6th February at 7pm. The production is a team effort, with students creating sets, props and costumes, acting in the show and playing in the band. Frome College Drama Lead Kayleigh Plomer said, “We’ve got proms, elections, concerts and the normal teenage heartbreak. Students and staff have worked hard to really bring this story to life in an incredible and vibrant way.   • Frome Netball. Frome Hearts vs Melksham – Tuesday 20th January Coming into the game, we were keeping our heads high just coming off of a recent win which keeps us firmly at the top of the table. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side but in the first quarter with a strong starting 7, our main focus was to play safe passes and we managed to end the first quarter 6-4 ahead. In the second quarter, we prioritised patience and were able to widen the score to 12-5. Coming into the third quarter we had two new players on court and were able to hold our lead, ending the quarter 17-10. During the fourth quarter the weather worsened and the court became much slippier. In this quarter we focused on keeping the lead and playing simple netball. The opposition were able to bring it back but we still ended with the win, the score being 20-16 keeping us at the top of the table. Special mention to Harriet and Kizzi for earning POM and PP!!   • Wake the trees at the Weylands Wassail. Frome’s popular annual wassail is back on Sunday 8th February in the community orchard and green space by the river at Weylands, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. The orchard is home to cherry, walnut, mulberry, pear and plum trees as well as the apple trees. These traditionally form part of the centuries-old practice of wassailing, which aims to encourage a good harvest and bring people together in community at the coldest and darkest time of the year. This year’s wassail performance will once again be led by local performers Annabelle Macfadyen and Simon Blakeman, with Frome Street Bandits providing musical accompaniment. The audience is encouraged to bring pots, pans and spoons to bang on cue during the performance, as well as hang toast in the trees of the orchard and ‘toast’ their roots with cider. Purple Elephant Family Support is inviting all families in Frome and the surrounding areas to the event at the Key Centre, Feltham Lane, from 10am to 1pm. The informal event is open to anyone new to Purple Elephant’s services, as well as those who have taken part in holiday activities, the Children’s Festival, Stay and Play sessions or befriending support. Visitors can offer suggestions and feedback on which services and events are most useful, enjoyable or important for local families.
