FROME College held its first ever TEDx event last month with talks from motivational speakers.
Hana Thompson, an employability coordinator at the college’s careers hub reports, “The first ever TEDxFrome event was held on Saturday 28th January in the Merlin Theatre.
“The event was largely organised by a team of Frome College students. The theme for the event was ‘aspire to inspire’ and it was clear that Frome did just that!
“The wide range of topics covered throughout the day certainly kept the audience engaged, and covered a multitude of subjects such as ‘The stars behind variable stars’ by Victoria Scowcroft, ‘Dance room spectroscopy’ by Joseph Hyde, ‘Reclaiming the right to give’ by Hettie Colquhoun, and ‘Levitated particles’ by Asier Marzo.
“The day also produced questions such as ‘What are robots thinking?’ with Rob Wortham; ‘Can sport improve young people’s lives?’ by Ioannis Costas Batlle; ‘A world on the brink – how do we face disaster?’ with Abigail Thompson; and Kit Yates with ‘How did the cat get its coat?’
“Importantly, the audience also learnt music by numbers, thanks to Andy Hawkings and Numbiano.
“One firm favourite speaker for the day was Frome College student Jessica Lee, aged just 14, who blew everyone away with her talk entitled ‘Stupid is as stupid does’, focusing on a dyslexic view on dyslexia.
“TEDxFrome is now set to be an annual event, held on the last weekend of January at Frome College’s Merlin Theatre. Following the success of this year’s event we have an outstanding platform to help elevate future events and also celebrate our amazing community.
“TEDxFrome talks will be uploaded to both the TED website and TED YouTube portal in the coming weeks giving everyone the opportunity to re-live the event.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for attending, and in particularly the TEDxFrome team of students for their energetic work and commitment to the project.”
