Frome will not be hosting the Tour of Britain this year as it did in 2009. The news has been described as “disappointing” by civic leaders in the town.
Frome’s mayor, councillor Damon Hooton said the news was a blow for the town. He said, “It is disappointing but I believe it is a case of share and share alike, and I am confident that the organisers will bring the event back to Frome at some point in the future.”
A spokesman for Frome Town Council said, “Frome benefitted greatly from the Tour of Britain launch in 2009. The town council worked hard with other groups in the town and put on a great show.
“It is disappointed that Frome is not hosting the event in 2010. However, it is only fair that other towns in the South West get the chance to host the event, too.
“The associated events that were staged in Frome alongside the Tour, such as the Cobble Wobble, were an enormous success and the town council hopes that these will happen again in 2010.”
When the event visited Frome last year, thousands of spectators came out into the streets to watch the race start in the town centre.
