Frome’s annual Cheese Show has been described as the ‘biggest and best show yet’
The show, in its 133rd year, easily broke last year’s record of 16,000 visitors with a turn out of over 17,000 show goers.
Show secretary Brenda Scott said, “It went really well, everyone enjoyed the show. All the feedback was much better than last year.”
This year saw a huge 900 entries in the Cheese Show, and over 550 entries for the cattle show, over double last years amount.
Amongst the most popular attractions were the UK freestyle motocross stunt show in which motorcycle riders attempt to impress with huge jumps and stunts using specially made takeoffs and down ramps.
Brenda Scott said, “The atmosphere was so energised everyone was happy and enjoying themselves.”
Celebrity British TV chef Martin Blunos attempted to break the world record attempt for the world’s most expensive cheese sandwich. With a price tag of £110 the sandwich offers a unique combination of luxury fillings including white truffle and edible gold leafs. As the Frome Times went to print it was uncertain whether the world record had been broken. “It’s a record that hasn’t had a record attempt before so we can try to set a new World Record” said public relations consultant, Lyndsey Mayhew.
The show also featured a donation to Positive Action on Cancer who received a cheque for £2,000 donated by the cheese section and exhibitors. Mary Taylor, director of PAC thanked the assembled diners and talked about how £2,000 would fund play therapy for 10 children affected by the death or illness of a parent, or alternatively would provide counselling for 16 adults affected by a diagnosis of cancer or other life threatening illness.
Rosie Eliot, PAC fundraiser said, “We are delighted with this kind donation and would like to thank all the cheese exhibitors for their generosity.”
Brenda said that seeing the visitors having a good time at the show made all the year’s preparation worthwhile.
“It’s so satisfying,” she said, “Preparing for the whole year and having all positive feedback. Walking around seeing everyone smiling, clapping their hands and getting involved with all the activities makes everything worthwhile.”
Brenda added that there were already plans formulating on how to make next year’s show even better than this year’s.
“Plans include expanding the countryside area. The new attraction this year went down a storm and was one of the most popular attractions.”
She said, “I just want to say thank you to everyone for coming out from Frome to support us. Without them the show wouldn’t be so successful. We’re definitely appreciative for all the support.”
