FROME Town FC have smashed club records as they are promoted into the highest league in the club’s history.
After successfully defeating Mangotsfield in the Zamaretto Division One South and West semi-final play off, the Robins fought off Sholing 1-0 in the play off final; earning promotion to the Zamaretto League’s Premier Division.
Manager Darren Perrin said, “This is truly unbelieveable, it has not really sunk in yet.
“After beating Mangotsfield 3-1 on the Thursday, we got back to the changing room and knew that this was only half-time. The players were all back in training Saturday morning, to prepare for Monday’s (2nd of May) final.
“There were between 300-350 supporters who came to the play-off final against Sholing in Southampton. This is a massive turn out for a non-league side and their support was vital for winning that game. There were four coaches from Frome, various minibuses plus many who drove; the support was immense.
“I am delighted for everyone at Frome Town FC, but also, the town has a team they can be proud of and can watch their results come in on Sky Sports next season.
“I cannot take the credit for these wins. I’ve said it before, the players deserve every accolade. We have a young squad and to go out and do what they have done is incredible. I am lucky to manage this team and I am still elated and overwhelmed by this achievement.”
Next season Darren will face off against his former club, Chippenham Town. “They are a decent side and the manager has done a fantastic job there, it is a game I will look forward to,” said Darren.
With the season having reached its conclusion, Darren is urging his players to enjoy their summer as next season will be the toughest yet.
“The players can take a bit of time off over the summer, but then it is straight back in to it for pre-season training and warm up,” he said. “We will need to up our game. The aim is to stay in the Premier Division now.”
The Zamaretto League Premier Division is two leagues below the Blue Square Bet Premier or National Conference.
Frome Town FC will now enjoy their presentation night on Friday the 13th of May. Having broken the club record for the longest undefeated streak and promoted to the highest league of the club’s history, the players and committee have a lot to celebrate.
