JAZZ maestro, Pee Wee Ellis, will be playing live in Frome as part of a 12-hour Live Music Marathon, in a bid to aid starving families in Africa.
The Live Music Marathon will take place at Frome’s Christ Church on Saturday 15th October, starting at 9.00am with an official opening from the Mayor of Frome, cllr Nick White, culminating with a live performance from Pee Wee Ellis at 9.00pm.
Pee Wee will be joined on stage by Frome musician Josh Arcoleo on saxophone and Mark Bellamy on piano.
Ann Burgess, director of music at Christ Church said, “This is a charity event, with all money raised going towards the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) East Africa Appeal, to help the people who are starving because of the famine in east Africa.
“The DEC is all the big charities working together; ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, CAFOD, CARE International UK, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide, Islamic Relief, Merlin, Plan UK, Save the Children, Oxfam, Tearfund, and World Vision UK.
“This means that giving through the Disasters Emergency Committee is really effective, because all the different charities are working together. I’ve been enormously encouraged that so many musicians want to take part, including very many children. Frome people are coming up trumps to aid the starving.”
Throughout the course of the day there will be over 30 performances. These include; the Merlin pantomime performers, Mendip councillors Alvin Horsfall and Richard Pinnock singing, John Plaxton’s jazz band, ‘come and sing’ Taizé chants by candlelight and much more.
“There are loads more wonderful musicians in Frome, who could have been asked, but the 12 hours just filled up really quickly. We could probably have filled up 24 hours with music, but I need some sleep!
“I hope we’ll get a lot of support from the general public, coming along on the day to listen to the music in return for a donation to the East Africa Appeal. People can just drop in and out when they like. They don’t have to stay for 12 hours!”
