Want to look great & feel fantastic for the Spring and Summer? Join Kate’s early morning Bootcamp Sessions in Victoria Park, Frome & you too can:

• get fit • tone up • feel energised • wear your target trousers • exercise before the kids get up • exercise before the pressures of the day mount up • feel the fresh air • keep your evenings free

Sessions run twice a week on a fortnightly basis and start at the end of March. All fitness abilities welcome. For more information and to book a place on the free trial session contact Kate.

Kate Burles at Exercise Easy continues to grow her business…

Kate is setting up early morning bootcamp sessions in Victoria Park from the end of March. The sessions start at 6.30 am and run for 45 minutes so people can train before they have to get ready for work or take the kids to school. “It seems like the perfect time to exercise as it doesn’t interrupt the day or the evenings,” says Kate. “There is the added bonus that Victoria Park is so beautiful at that time of the day with the birds singing. It couldn’t be better.” Kate’s sessions work all parts of the body, using cardiovascular and resistance training and use both body weight and equipment. Kate says she tries to make them as fun as possible as, at that time in the morning, you need a good reason to get up to exercise. “If it means you can look good in your bikini or just feel energised & ready for work, it’s got to be worth the effort,” she added. Kate’s sessions are aimed at men and women at all levels of fitness. She guarantees you will leave the park feeling you have worked hard, but what’s more, see changes in energy levels, wellbeing, sleep and body shape if you follow a good healthy diet. Kate also takes one-to-one personal training sessions for people who would rather train on their own or in their own home and is also hoping to start her evening sessions in the park again soon, once she finds a suitable evening. So she says, “watch this space!”

  • Local community to plant 10,000 daffodil bulbs this autumn

Local schools and community groups are set to plant 10,000 daffodil bulbs in partnership with Frome Town Council this October and November.

The daffodils, including Tenby and Tête-à-Tête varieties, will flower in late winter and early spring and will provide an important food source for early pollinators such as bees and hoverflies. They will be planted at several sites across Frome, including some new parcels of land taken on by the town council as part of devolution from Somerset Council.

In addition to the sessions with schools and community groups, there is a community planting day on Tuesday 28th October from 10am to 12pm at Brunel Way, limited to 40 participants. Taking part is free and anyone is welcome but booking is essential.

  • Tributes paid to popular pub landlord

Tributes have been paid to popular Frome man and former landlord of The Cornerhouse, Martin Earley, who died recently.

Martin moved to Frome in 2011 and bought the pub, which was formerly called the Lamb Inn.

He was passionate about live music, particularly jazz, giving local bands a space to perform regularly at the pub. Martin also supported the charity Active and in Touch, offering the pub for their meetings.

Local jazz musician John Law said, “Martin was such an amazing character. A really strong supporter of local music and musicians. As a jazz musician, I played at The Cornerhouse on many, many occasions and he was always so appreciative and treated us musicians with so much respect. A really kind-hearted and generous man who will be greatly missed by Frome. Thanks, Martin, for everything you did for us.”

  • Female supergroup raises £30,000 over decade of fundraising shows

A Frome singer has helped raise £30,000 for local charities over a decade as part of an all-female supergroup.

Female of the Species played their farewell show last month, bringing ten years of fundraising gigs to a close.

The group brought together five singers from popular local bands, including Frome’s Claire Perry, Jules Moreton, Charmaigne Andrews, Julia Hanratty and Nicky Davis, backed by local musicians.

The group has spent a decade performing fundraising gigs for charities ranging from the Bath and Wiltshire Air Ambulance to smaller organisations such as Voices, a Bath-based domestic violence charity that has personally supported Claire.

  • Purple Elephant to hold family quiz night

A family quiz night is being held on 10th October in the main hall at Frome College, organised by family support charity, Purple Elephant.

The quiz will run from 5.30pm to 7pm and welcomes teams of up to six people of any age at £10 per team, payable at the door. People are encouraged to register their team ahead of the event. However, walk-ups will, of course, also be warmly welcomed by the organisers too.

Purple Elephant provides holiday activities, pre-school parent support, a youth club, a befriending service and the popular annual Children’s Festival.

Purple Elephant’s Service Manager, Sue Willis, said, “We try to ensure most of what we do is about the family having fun together, so our first fundraising quiz night is no exception. It will start at 5.30pm, so no need for a babysitter as this evening is open to all to come along.”

  • 175 years of the railway in Frome

Frome railway station is marking 175 years of serving the town, having first opened in 1850 under the Wiltshire, Somerset and Weymouth Railway.

The building is Grade II listed and was designed by an assistant of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It is thought to be the last through train shed in the Western Region. A blue plaque on display at the station commemorates this, noting that the timber construction is largely unaltered and describing it as ‘a rare example of a Brunellian through train shed still used for its original purpose.’

The line between Westbury and Frome was officially opened on 7th October 1850 and the day was deemed a public holiday, with the opening marked by a special excursion train to Oxford carrying 100 residents, travelling on the train named ‘Wolf’.
