TEN years ago, ancient tree specialist and local author Julian Hight released his first book for the National Trust: Britain’s Tree Story – the history and legends of Britain’s ancient trees.
A decade on, it has been re-released with a striking new cover. Julian travelled the length and breadth of Britain, camera in hand, to photograph and tell the story of Britain’s oldest, largest and most famous trees through legend, literature and folklore. The book includes Frome’s magnificent Elephant Beech tree, which stood in St John’s churchyard until it was tragically felled in 2016.
Julian says, “The initial release of Britain’s Tree Story turned a page towards an exciting new chapter for me. The fact that the book has never been out of print speaks volumes about the timeless nature and appeal of its subject matter.
“I think it currently reflects a general aspiration to connect with nature, especially through two lock-downs during the pandemic. I couldn’t be more pleased!”
