‘Please put your rubbish in the bin,’ says local resident Valerie Baker who is pleading with the community to help with keeping Frome tidy.
Valerie has spoken about her frustration over the amount of litter around Frome and is pleading with people to put their rubbish in the bin or take it home.
In a letter to the Frome Times, Valerie said, “Frome is a very special town I’m sure you will agree; we have amenities not enjoyed by many towns this size – theatres, sports centre, hospital, health park, college etc. with a wealth of historic buildings, but we are blighted by one thing – litter.
“Many people try so hard to help, such as HOPE Frome and many individuals, including my husband, who is often seen picking up litter around our area. We are members of Portway Methodist Church, and every week we pick up litter around the church and the public footpath leading up to Singers Knoll and Randolph Road.
“On Sunday morning I was appalled by the amount of litter in the church vicinity (we filled two black bin bags), hence this appeal.
“Through Community Tax we pay to have our streets cleared – could we endeavour to lighten our tax burden by not dropping litter thoughtlessly on our pavements and streets? That goes too for throwing rubbish out of car windows!
“It seems many people are only too happy to carry their cans, bottles, takeaway food, sweets and snacks etc. but the moment they are empty they are seemingly too heavy to carry! It seems wrong to expect other people to go around picking up after us.
“Please take your litter home, or deposit it in a local refuse bin – the council does provide bins around the town.
“If you are able, keep the frontage of your own home or shop clear of litter. We keep available a “pick up stick” for picking up litter. We have acquired ours at sales, or charity shops – they are invaluable for picking up litter, it saves bending and handling rubbish.
“A simple solution to a big problem. Dispose of your rubbish more thoughtfully. Please keep Frome Tidy.”
