Frome Town Ladies FC moved back to joint top of the South West League Premier Division on Sunday 11th October courtesy of a hard earned 2-1 victory away in Bristol at Downend Flyers Ladies FC.
Frome went into the game with a depleted squad, missing the likes of Suzanne Beavin, Charley Ratcliffe, Sarah Lewendon, Bethan Jones and Georgia Williams, but gave debuts to new signings striker Amy Laws and midfielder Cian Buddin.
Downend played down the slope in the first half and immediately pushed forward at every opportunity using a very direct long ball style.
Luckily the home side found the visitors back 4 of Isaacson, Beukers, Perkins and Saunders in great form and this was coupled with the safe goalkeeping of Hannah Christer.
Slowly but surely Frome got their passing game going and both Laws and skipper Ali Bryant went close to breaking the deadlock. Frome were delighted to reach the half time interval deadlocked at 0-0 knowing they had the advantage of the slope in the second period.
15 minutes in Frome got the breakthrough as Laws ran onto a ball over the Downend defence and finished superbly to register her first ever goal for the club. This spurred the home side into action and they equalised 10 minutes later when a defensive error let them score.
Frome were not to be deterred though and with 15 minutes left they were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal and Bryant struck a great shot that the Downend keeper could not prevent from crossing the line.
A mixture of resolute defending and superb counter attacking saw Frome home to claim the valuable 3 points and join Torquay at the top of the table.
