RENOWNED author Nina Stibbe is coming to the Merlin Theatre on Monday 30th October, to talk about her new book, Went to London, Took the Dog.
“Join us for a sparkling evening with bestselling author, and (in the words of Ann Patchett) ‘the funniest person who owns a computer’, Nina Stibbe,” says Tina Gaisford-Waller from the event organisers, Winstone’s Hunting Raven Books.
“Nina Stibbe burst onto the literary scene ten years ago with her laugh-out-loud memoir, Love, Nina. The book charted the formative years she spent as live-in nanny for ‘MK’ (founder of the London Review of Books) with neighbour Alan Bennett popping in (uninvited) for his tea most evenings. A girl of 20, down from Leicester, Nina’s outsider’s eye on the craziness of the London household she became part of was witty, astute and laugh-out-loud funny. The book won the National Book Awards Popular Non-Fiction Book of The Year 2014.
“Now Nina is back with more warm, witty and wise life stories with her latest book Went to London, Took the Dog – and she’s coming to the Merlin Theatre in Frome to talk all about it!
“20 years after leaving the big smoke, Stibbe is back in town this time with her dog, Peggy. Together they take up lodging in the house of writer Deborah Moggach in Camden for ‘a year-long sabbatical.’ Between scrutinising her son’s online dating developments, navigating the politics of the local pool and taking detergent advice at the launderette, Nina’s account of being ‘a 60-year-old runaway’ is hilarious, irreverent, joyful and poignant.
“Stibbe’s ear and eye are as uniquely sharp as ever on friendship, motherhood, independence, the menopause, branching out and growing up (and at 61, it’s about bloody time!)
“The event will be on Monday 30th October at 7.30pm. Tickets are £8 each and can be booked at the Merlin Theatre website (www.merlintheatre.co.uk), or via their box office (01373 465949). Walk-up tickets may still be available on the night, but we strongly recommend that you book ahead to avoid disappointment.”
Nina Stibbe will be signing the books after the event.
