Frome will be holding its annual Remembrance Day parade and service at the Memorial Theatre this Sunday 8th November at 11am.
The parade will begin at 10.40am at Frome Cadet Centre on Keyford Road – anyone wishing to be involved should meet there at 10.15am. The service will run from 10.55am to 11.20am and will observe a two-minutes’ silence to remember those who have lost their lives in conflict as well as their families and friends.
Jane Norris, chairman of Frome’s branch of Royal British Legion (RBL) said, “The Remembrance Parade has grown in support in the past nine or so years, and we have upward of 800 people attend, with each year more wanting to be involved.
“Each year is poignant in its own particular way, either for personal reasons or for nationally commemorated events. Everyone is equal in times of war or times of peace, irrespective of rate, rank, regiment, ship or squadron, family, friend or even foe.
“The RBL are the custodians of remembrance and welfare and although no distinction is made between anyone, Frome is honoured to have some very special veterans living amongst us. This year we are acknowledging with respect the 70th anniversary of VE and VJ Day. Five veterans of that time, now all in their nineties, and one, an evacuee in his eighties, will lay a wreath for comrades and the families who lived through WW2.”
The Assembly Rooms will be open for warming refreshments after the service.
Later that evening, a Service of Remembrance will take place at St John the Baptist Church, Frome, at 6.30pm when MP David Warburton will read the lesson.
The annual poppy collection fortnight continues. If you should wish to volunteer an hour or more to collect please contact Maggy Daniell, poppy appeal organiser on 07854 818286 or Jane Norris 07776 208531.
