The people of Frome can now keep up with developments down at Rodden Nature Reserve by ‘liking’ its new Facebook page, which has been set up by the voluntary team that manages the site on behalf of Asda.
Much-valued and now officially registered with Mendip District Council by Somerset Environmental Records Centre (SERC) as being a nationally important ‘Local Wildlife Site’ (LWS), the reserve lies adjacent to the Asda’s superstore at Wallbridge and is home to an ever-increasing array of flora and fauna.
Facebook users are now able to enjoy regular posts and updates with photos, and will be invited to share their own observations and pictures now the reserve has re-opened to the public following the breeding season.
There will be news of ongoing survey work, breeding successes and new discoveries, such as the common twayblade found this summer for the first time on the reserve, and images of some of the other orchids found more readily, such as the common spotted and bee orchids.
Readers will also be relieved to hear that an aquatic survey, undertaken after the slurry pollution incident on the river Frome that resulted in the deaths of many thousands of fish, concluded that water quality at the reserve was largely unaffected and remains in excellent condition.
FAWG volunteer Jim Rosser commented, “I think everyone around Frome that’s interested in wildlife and nature will appreciate these regular updates and insights, especially at the times of year when public access is limited while the breeding season is in full swing. All of us involved here at the reserve are really proud of how this vital habitat is developing, and look forward to sharing all the good news more regularly.”
So to spread the word among your local Facebook friends, just search ‘Rodden Nature Reserve’, and then ‘like’ and share away.
