The Frome Lions’ annual summer fete in Victoria Park has been hailed a great success by organisers.
A large crowd enjoyed attractions including old favourites such as the Lions train rides, coconut shy, skittles and hot dog stall, together with a dog training exhibition and children’s wellie throwing competition.
Mike Geake, of the Lions Club of Frome said, “This longstanding event in the Frome calendar was blessed with glorious weather which helped to bring in a large crowd which meant that as well as having a fun afternoon, the event raised a significant amount of money for both the Lions charity fund and a host of other diverse charities and organisations who had stalls at the fete.
“The Lions would like to thank the Frome Dog Training Club for their wonderful demonstration which is always popular with both young and old alike. They would also like to apologise for the non-appearance of another firm favourite, the Punch & Judy show, which had to be cancelled at the last minute due to illness. An impromptu children’s wellie throwing competition garnered quite a bit of support and will hopefully reappear at next year’s event.
“The fete was officially opened by Frome’s new mayor cllr Rich Ackroyd who was accompanied by his wife Jacqui. He extended a warm welcome to everybody and praised the Lions for their work in the community.
“After opening the fete the mayor and his wife joined a number of the Lions to dedicate a seat in the children’s play area in Victoria Park in memory of the late Lion Roger Windley, who sadly died suddenly a few days after last year’s event. Roger was instrumental in working with Frome Town Council to adopt the former putting green into the superb much-used area it has become and was jointly funded by the Lions last year to commemorate 50 years of Lionism in Frome. Also in attendance were Roger’s wife Lion Beverley and daughter Sarah.
“The Lions would like to thank everybody who was involved for their help in making the day a great success, especially Dave Lucy Ltd for help in transporting the equipment to and from the fete, the Victoria Park staff for their selfless help, Pete Daymon-Johns for his MC duties and for entertaining the children with his karaoke, (who will ever forget the Postman Pat routine?), the St John Ambulance team, Frome Town Band and last, but not least, the commercial organisations in attendance who made donations to the Lions charity fund.”
