Local band’s charity Christmas single to debut at fundraising gig

A local band is set to host a special fundraising gig next month to raise money for Fair Frome and launch their first-ever Christmas single in aid of the charity.

Sweet Machine, an electronic band with a nostalgic 80s sound, will perform on Saturday 7th December, at The Bennett Centre on Vicarage Street.

All proceeds from ticket sales and the Christmas single will be donated to Fair Frome, which provides crucial support services, including the town’s food bank, Furniture Bank, Food at Five, Community Pantry, Baby Basics Bank and the Financial Assistance Scheme, and also provides support to residents in need at Christmas.

“It’s going to be a bit of a party,” said band member Richard Churchyard. “We have a duo opening the evening, followed by an actor performing a 20-minute narration of a Christmas ghost story, and then we’ll take the stage for our set.”

On the night, the band will also launch their Christmas single, Come Inside for Christmas, which addresses themes of reducing loneliness and isolation. “One of my lifetime ambitions was to write and release a Christmas song,” explained Richard. “Our singer and I have created a track with a very good message; no one should feel alone at Christmas, and someone is always thinking of them. That’s why we’re donating all proceeds to Fair Frome because the charity does such fantastic work for people.”

Sweet Machine have been playing together for 35 years and met in London. This will not be their first gig in Frome, as they have headlined the Frome Festival and played in local venues, including the Cheese and Grain.

“We class ourselves as an 80s feel. We write all our own stuff and take inspiration from Erasure, Soft Cell and Pet Shop Boys. We have started adding some covers to the set, which have been going down well but we do write all our own music,” Richard added.

Doors for the event open at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £8 and can be purchased at the door or from Raves from the Grave, Richard’s record shop on King Street.

  • Spring fun for families at the Merlin Theatre

The Merlin Theatre has a range of shows to entertain children and families this spring.

In March, Selwood Academy presents Oliver! JR, bringing the streets of Victorian England to life from 25th to 28th March. Audiences will follow Oliver, a workhouse orphan, as he becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker, escapes to London, and joins a gang of thieves led by Fagin.

Organisers say, “Full of classic songs like Consider Yourself, Food Glorious Food and Oom-Pah-Pah, some of Frome’s many talented school pupils take to the stage with this great family show.

April brings magic with The Ultimate Bubble Show by Guinness World Record holder Ray Bubbles on 10th April. He will create stunning bubble sculptures and effects, including a volcano bubble, a soap bubble carousel, a bubble ghost, and even a tornado inside a bubble."

  • Happiness habits course at The Good Heart

A six-week course helping people develop ‘happiness habits’ is due to run at The Good Heart from Sunday 15th March.

Action for Happiness, the evidence‑based global movement promoting kindness, connection and wellbeing, is running the Happiness Habits course. The in-person course will be co‑facilitated by local volunteers Sue Jeffrey and Nikki Tanner.

The Happiness Habits course is a secular, science‑backed programme that explores six weekly themes, including gratitude, self‑care, resilience, kindness and meaning, through short expert videos, guided mindful moments and small‑group conversations. Each week encourages participants to try a small practical action to build happier habits and share experiences with the group.

“Sitting together in person made a huge difference when we ran our first course,” said Sue Jeffrey, co‑facilitator. “People formed strong connections, tried new practices and reported feeling more positive after six weeks.”

  • Charity launches support sessions for people with FND

Awareness sessions for people with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) are set to run at Frome Library following a successful launch event.

Organised by the charity FND FrieNDS, the first session on 19th February saw 18 visitors attend to find out more about the condition and the support available. Many joined the charity’s closed Facebook group on the day, while others who were already members came to talk with the team.

Trustee Dave Penny said, “The event started at 11am with someone waiting for us as we set up. This continued throughout the day until we packed up at 3pm. The event was a great success, not limited by the number of visitors but from the reaction I received on the Facebook chat groups I advertised on.”

  • Church fundraises for vital renovation project

A church in Frome is fundraising for a vital renovation to save the historic building.

Christ Church, on Christchurch Street West, was built in 1818 and is on a ‘heritage at risk’ list due to the condition of the roof, rainwater components, windows, heating and paintwork.

To re-energise the sacred space, the committee Christ Church Future was set up.

A member of the committee, Mary Gatliffe, said, “We are determined to ensure that the building is watertight, warm, accessible and welcoming. We are planning a renovation project which will address the roof, restore the windows, improve the heating (using sustainable energy sources) and ensure that the building is welcoming and accessible for all.

“Visitors, churchgoers and the wider community have said that the building is important to them, whether as a place for worship, as a great venue for musical events, as a space for quiet reflection or simply as a visible part of the cultural heritage of Frome.”

The weathered polycarbonate sheeting on some of the windows has already been removed, making the building look more open. Plans are also being drawn up for a permanent access ramp. However, to complete the rest of the work, the committee says a great deal more money will need to be raised.

  • Young people bring powerful artwork to streets of Frome

Young environmental advocates are set to bring a powerful, thought-provoking artwork to the streets of Frome.

The group, aged seven to 18 years old, will carry a handmade globe sculpture created from rubbish collected on local streets, along with natural and recycled materials, from the Cheese and Grain to Rook Lane Chapel on 7th March.

The artwork, called ‘Plastic Bones’, symbolises the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our planet and the vital role of everyone in holding up its future.

Project coordinator of Frome Youth Climate Action, Chris Redmond, said, “This Green and Healthy Frome project, funded by the Lottery’s Climate Action Fund, based in Edventure and facilitated by Future Shed, started by looking at how much waste the world produces, around 400 million tons of plastic per year – roughly equal to the combined weight of all people on Earth – yet only about 10% of this plastic is recycled.”

  • Cycling workshop to help women ‘get back on the saddle’

A workshop to help women rediscover cycling or try it for the first time is set to run on International Women’s Day.

‘Back on the Saddle’, is being hosted by Frome Community Bike Project and will be a relaxed, drop-in session taking place on Sunday 8th March from 10am to 1pm at the workshop at Station Approach.

Led by experienced female volunteers, the event aims to be relaxed, encouraging and judgement-free.

Organisers say, “It will be focused on building confidence, sharing information and meeting others in a welcoming environment.

“Whether your bike’s been gathering dust or you’re feeling a bit nervous about getting started, you’ll learn how to give your bike a simple safety check, get tips on safer, quieter routes around Frome and have the chance to meet new cycling buddies. You don’t need to have a bike to take part, just come and find out about Frome Community Bike Project and ask anything cycling-related."

  • Disco fun run for cancer charity

A disco fun run to raise money for cancer counselling charity We Hear You (WHY) will take place on Thursday 12th March.

The event is organised by local mother and son duo Rose Hiron-Grimes and Keinan Cooper, who are running the London Marathon this year for WHY.

Participants will meet at The Crown Inn at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. The 5km flat route will see local DJ collective BassBeatz turn the streets of Keyford into a moving dance floor. DJ Lloydy will lead the run on his custom-built music bike, providing a disco soundtrack to dance, run, wheel, or walk along the route. There is a suggested donation of £10, which includes glow-in-the-dark accessories.

Rose and Keinan have both seen friends benefit from WHY’s professional counselling and have experienced the impact of cancer bereavements themselves. Earlier this year, WHY launched an urgent fundraising appeal to raise £55,000 by the end of March to avoid closure.

  • Screening to honour acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker

Film fans in Keyford are holding a special event on 5th March to mark the death of Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr, who died in January.

The event will be a screening of Tarr’s award-winning film Werckmeister Harmonies at The Crown Inn.

Organiser Simon Keyes said, “Werckmeister Harmonies traces the collapse of the social order in a remote Hungarian town following the arrival of a sinister circus featuring a giant whale.

“Renowned as a pioneer of ‘slow cinema’, his films are characterised by long takes, elaborate camera movements and stark black-and-white cinematography. They include The Turin Horse and the seven-and-a-half-hour masterpiece Sátántangó. Keyford Kino will be screening his award-winning film Werckmeister Harmonies (2000)."
