Local concerts from the Nordic Singers

THE Nordic Singers group will be holding concerts in Frome on Saturday 11th September, 7.30pm at the Christ Church, Frome; Sunday 12th September, 12 noon, Al fresco singing in Stourhead Gardens and lastly Sunday 12th September, 6pm, Choral Evensong in Holy Trinity, Bradford-on-Avon.

Nordic Singers started its life as a small ad hoc vocal group, founded by Kevin Duggan in 1998 and based at St. Katharine´s, East Woodlands. Kevin had only just moved back to England after working as a church musician in Norway and Denmark, and the choir’s repertoire was largely Scandinavian.

Kevin moved to the Danish Island of Bornholm in 2004, and became the conductor of the liturgical choir Skt. Nicolai Kantori. This choir travelled to England on several occasions, performing concerts and singing for Services together with members of Nordic Singers.

Since 2015, Kevin has been Director of Music at Dunblane Cathedral in Scotland, and since then Nordic Singers has become a truly international group, comprising singers from Great Britain, Denmark, Germany and Latvia.

“The choir has met in a different country every summer, meeting for a couple of intense rehearsals before giving public performances and sharing much mirth,” explained Kevin. “The singers have sung in Ireland (2016), Italy (2017), Latvia (2018) and Denmark (2019), and were due to perform in England in 2020.

“Of course, everything has changed since then, and international travel has become almost impossible. However, we are delighted to announce that a group of UK-based singers will meet this September, and we are greatly looking forward to singing again!

“We are grateful to Christ Church, Frome; Stourhead Gardens and Holy Trinity, Bradford-on-Avon for being so accommodating in these difficult times. Our repertoire will be broad – music by Purcell, Reger, Sark, McLeod and much else besides.”

  • MP urges government to apologise over farm tax uncertainty

Frome MP Anna Sabine has called on the government to apologise for the ‘damaging impact’ its proposed inheritance tax on family farms had on rural communities.

The government had initially proposed a £1 million limit for full relief. After months of campaigning by farmers across Somerset and the country, the threshold will now rise to £2.5 million from April 2026 for inheritance tax bills when farms are passed to the next generation.

Speaking on the first day of Parliament’s return last week, Anna challenged the Minister for Tax to acknowledge the effect the proposed tax would have had on estates worth £1 million.

She warned that the uncertainty created by the policy had harmed the “whole rural economy”.

  • Up to £3,000 available in community grants

There is still time to access funding of up to £3,000 for community projects in Frome, as Frome Town Council’s community grants scheme is still open for applications.

This year, the usual community grants round (closing date Wednesday 28th January) is joined by the newly formed Young Opinions Unite (YOU) grants panel (closing date Friday 23rd January), made up of a group of local 12 and 13-year-olds. Decisions for both rounds will follow at the end of February.

The longstanding community grants process round has a broad remit and grants of up to £3,000 can be used to fund projects for all ages, provided they align with the aims of the Council Plan 2025-2027.

The new youth panel ‘Young Opinions Unite’ is seeking applications for grants of up to £2,000 from a total fund of £10,000, which are geared solely to projects supporting children and young people, via specific criteria set by the YOU panel. Applicants are requested to apply to one of the two available grant funding pots, not to both.

  • Tributes paid to popular founder of Keyford Hedgehog Rescue
