A local fundraiser is set to embark on a 77km trek across Jordan’s Rift Valley to raise money for Frome-based cancer charity, We Hear You (WHY).
Over five days, Ruth Knagg will journey through the rugged desert landscape, ultimately arriving at the ancient city of Petra, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Ruth sets off on 5th October and after an easy first day exploring Mount Nebo and the Dead Sea, the small group she is joining will begin a five-day trek through rugged arid mountain territory, following the same path used by the Bedouin nomads.
Along the way, she will pass Neolithic settlements and unexcavated Roman ruins and end up at the ancient capital of the Nabatean Arabs, Petra. The total distance will equate to 10 miles per day.
“The biggest challenge for me is probably going to be the heat, since I’m more equipped for the cold,” said Ruth. “We are camping along the way and expecting the nights to be cold in the desert, so that should be more familiar. I’ve done some long training walks recently and have just re-watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as homework!”
Ruth has already paid for all the costs of the trip herself and has set up a fundraising page for We Hear You (WHY), which provides therapeutic support to anyone affected by cancer and other life-threatening conditions.
Having surpassed her original £1,000 target, she is now hoping to reach a new stretch target of £1,200. If anyone would like to sponsor her, here is the link: https://wehearyou.enthuse.com/pf/petra
