Local MP Anna Sabine visited students at Avanti Park School recently to talk about her educational journey and her career path to date.
Anna shared insight into her daily life with Year 7 and 8 students, explaining what it is like to take part in parliamentary debates in the House of Commons, as well as describing some of the rewards and challenges of working in public service as part of the community.
Assistant Principal Brendan Bayew said, “We are delighted to meet Anna and have the opportunity to find out about her ambitious career as part of our aspirational next steps for students into further education and the world of work. At Avanti Park School, developing a culture of high aspirations is an integral part of what we do.”
Interim Principal Carolyn Dickinson said, “Students at Avanti Park School are encouraged to consider how they can make the world a better place whilst fulfilling their potential. Hearing how Anna strives to do just that is inspiring for our students.”
Many insightful questions were posed to Anna by an eager Year 7 and 8 students, who had been reading an introduction to politics in the book If I Ran the Country by Rich Knight.
Some of the questions included: “What is your opinion on lowering the voting age in the UK?” “How stressful was the election for you?” “What do you think the government should do about prisons?” “Can you help us include First Aid in the National Curriculum?” and “Is your party interested in putting more funding into youth services outside of school?”
Anna engaged warmly with the students and answered as many questions as possible and with good humour.
“I had a wonderful time visiting the students at Avanti Park School,” says Anna. “The questions they asked were insightful and varied. Their curiosity and keen interest in the world around them give me a lot of hope for the future.”
Avanti Park School students and staff expressed their gratitude towards Anna for her memorable visit, from which they have learnt a lot about our country’s democracy, life as an MP and possible routes to this career.
