Longleat Koala keepers fly to Australia to help with bushfire rescue

Koala keepers from Longleat are on their way to Australia to help with the ongoing wildlife emergency caused by the devastating bushfires.

Two specialist keepers from the Wiltshire safari park with experience of working with koalas and wombats are flying to South Australia to assist with the wildlife rescue operation.

Longleat is the only zoological collection in Europe to look after southern koalas, and is part of a long term partnership with the South Australia Government and Cleland Wildlife Park, in the Adelaide Hills, to support research and conservation programmes for wild koalas.

Last year Viscount Weymouth, Ceawlin Thynn became patron of the International Koala Centre for Excellence (IKCE), a ground-breaking joint initiative to support research and raise funds for koala management and conservation.

“We have been in regular contact with our colleagues in Australia throughout this devastating natural disaster and have been watching with horror as the true extent of the damage and loss has become clear,” said Longleat’s Head of Animal Adventure Graeme Dick.

A second Longleat keeper who also has experience caring for and treating koalas and wombats will join Graeme on the trip.

The decision to travel followed a call with partners in Australia who suggested any experienced, hands-on practical help with the support effort would be beneficial given the scale of the situation.

“We offered whatever assistance we could and they made it clear having experienced keepers who have worked with koalas and are familiar with the set up at Cleland Wildlife Park would be a big help,” said Graeme.

The team is being flown out free of charge by Singapore Airlines, who are official supporters of the Longleat and IKCE partnership. In addition to practical help and support with the rescue programme, the team will be taking a Longleat donation of AUS$ 25,000 to help fund work being undertaken by three local rescue groups based in South Australia.

“The initial funds will be shared between SAVEM (South Australian Veterinary Emergency Management), Minton Farm Rescue and Manfred Heide Wombat Rescue,” said Graeme.

“Urgent help and resources are needed and we felt this was the best way to get extra funds and supplies direct to the areas where they are most required as quickly as possible.

“In addition to this immediate help we are launching a series of fundraising initiatives to assist with the longer term recovery programme. Full details of how to donate are on the Longleat website,” he said.

Funding will also include long-term support and research to help koala populations and ongoing issues with disease through IKCE.

“This is an absolutely catastrophic situation and Australia’s unique wildlife is being particularly hard hit. Recovery will take years and any help we’re able to give will be incredibly welcome,” he added.

It has been estimated that close to 500 million animals have been killed in the New South Wales bushfires alone since September and the toll nationwide if feared to be much higher.

  • Strong showing from Frome at Sevens tournament

Frome RFC enjoyed an excellent day at the annual Bath Combination Rugby Sevens Tournament at Avon RFC last month, topping their pool with three convincing victories before their cup run came to an end in a hard-fought quarter-final.

  • Ferris double seals opening day victory

Saturday 8th August: Frome Town 2-0 Wimborne Town

Frome Town started their Premier Division South campaign in the perfect way with a 2-0 victory over Wimborne in front of 638 people at Badgers Hill.

The Magpies had the first opportunity of the game inside three minutes but Lewis Williams dragged his shot wide. Ten minutes later, Albie Hopkins saw his cross from the right deflected into the path of Callum Gould on the edge of the area who rifled his effort just over the bar. That would have been an incredible goal to kick-start the season.

Chances did seem aplenty in the first-half as a nice training ground move for the hosts just after the 20-minute mark saw Hopkins fizz in a ball from a set piece. Archie Ferris managed to get a flick on it as it just brushed the top of the crossbar and ricocheted away for a goal kick. It was a brilliant team move from Danny Greaves’ side.

  • Flyte return to Cheese and Grain

English singer-songwriters Flyte will be returning to Frome next month for a show at the Cheese and Grain.

Formed by longtime friends Will Taylor and Nick Hill, the band will perform on Friday 11th September.

Flyte will be returning to Frome after releasing recordings last year from a day spent at the Bert Jansch Studio. They also performed at the Tree House in 2024.

Organisers said, “Flyte have quietly built a reputation as one of the UK’s most thoughtful and emotionally resonant modern bands. Across acclaimed releases including The Loved Ones, This Is Really Going To Hurt and their 2023 self-titled album Flyte, the duo have carved out a sound that blends classic singer-songwriter intimacy with rich, contemporary production and breathtaking vocal harmony.
