FROME’S annual Great Big Green Week returns this year with a wide range of events taking place between 10th to 18th June.

As part of a nationwide week, Frome joins other towns across the country highlighting different activities and changes we can all make to tackle the climate emergency.

Working with the community, Frome Town Council have created an exciting programme of events, from walks to yoga and even a clothes swap, there’s lots to get involved with.

Leader of the council, cllr Lisa Merryweather said, “There’s so much to look forward to in Frome’s Great Big Green Week, so make sure you book your events! The interesting and varied activities all shine a light on the action everyone in Frome and the surrounding villages can take to help to tackle the climate and ecological emergency. There’ll be lots of information and pointers on how we can all make the changes that will make a big difference not only to our town, but the planet too.”

Fancy being at one with nature? Join the yoga class in Rodden Meadow on Tuesday 13th June, it’s suitable for all levels and you’ll be able to feel the energy flow with a creative vinyasa yoga practise; a gentle waking of the body, building to a dynamic standing sequence.

Or why not enjoy Frome’s open spaces with the Frome Heritage Tree Walk taking place on Saturday 17th June led by local author and ancient tree specialist Julian Hight. You will see some of Frome’s most majestic trees and hear about their history and lore. Starting at the Cheese and Grain, the easy walk will include Millennium Green, Rodden Meadow and Willow Vale.

Or join FROGS (Frome Recreation and Open Ground Supporters) for an evening walk on Wednesday 14th June around North Frome. Trees, both native and introduced, are a particular feature of the walk, which links together several of the town’s open spaces.

Fancy a movie night? On Tuesday 13th June at 7pm, Sustainable Frome presents DIRT! The Movie at the town hall. Narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis, the film brings to life the environmental, economic, social and political impact that soil has. It shares the stories of experts from all over the world who study and are able to harness the beauty and power of a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with soil.

Following at the town hall on Friday 16th June, Gardening Together want to connect and support frustrated gardeners with unloved gardens so everyone can have access to a growing space and have the knowledge and tools to succeed. Got an unloved garden that needs some TLC? Have you got a green space that you need some help with and are willing to share maybe in exchange for some light weeding or lawn mowing once in a while? Join the movement that’s just started growing.

Everyone Needs Pockets is supporting The Big Green Clothes Swap, taking place at the Silk Mill on Wednesday 14th June from 7pm to 9pm. Clear out your wardrobe and find some fine new second (or third!) hand threads. Bring what you don’t want, take home what you do!

Events are happening in the villages outside Frome too. Head over to Rode on Saturday 17th June from 2pm to 5pm for the ‘How Do We Tackle the Climate Emergency?’ The event features a series of talks from different speakers setting out ways in which we can tackle the Climate Emergency, from individual action to community initiatives. And Sunday 18th June from 2pm to 5pm visit around a dozen homes and businesses in Rode, Beckington, Norton St Philip and surrounding villages to see at first hand environmental initiatives in action (heat pumps, solar PV, Tesla batteries, insulation, electric vehicles, water recycling…) You’ll get to speak to the owners and hear about the pros and cons.

Also, on Sunday 18th June there’s a number of guided tours around Tellisford Mill. A guided tour of a micro-hydro plant, generating electricity from the River Frome. Visit this fascinating location and discover how the Mill was restored to become a power station. Hear more about the history of the Mill, learn about the restoration project and see at first-hand how energy is generated today.
