Frome Lions have presented a car to the Minehead branch of Mencap, with the money raised from a Lions’ Gentlemen’s Sporting Dinner, which was held at Orchardleigh House in January.
The local charity helps people with learning disabilities and mental health problems in sheltered living accommodation at Bampton Court in Minehead.
Jane Milton, the manager, was presented with the car keys from Michael Priddy, general sales manager Beaver Ford, with Lion President, Dave Allen, Mencap residents and other Lions in attendance on Saturday 5th May. Jane thanked the Lions on behalf of all the residents and their helpers, and said they were overwhelmed with the gift which had come by the generosity of the Lions. This nearly new Vauxhall Zafira car will give the local Mencap residents transport, as it is ideal for their needs to take a wheel chair in the boot and carry five people in comfort. The car was purchased with the £6,500 raised from the Frome Lions’ Gentlemen’s Sporting Dinner.
Lions Clive Weeks and David Naish, who were the main organisers of the Gentlemen’s Sporting Dinner said it was probably the most rewarding event that they had attended. To see the joy and pleasure this car would give the residents of Bampton Court was very moving, especially in the memory of the late Lion Gerald Williams, whose daughter is a resident there.
Frome Lions Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who attended and supported the fund raising dinner. They say, “Through the generosity of those who donated gifts for raffle or auction it is always the hope that lives can be improved for those less well off.” Please visit the website for more information about Frome Lions Club at www.fromelions.org.uk.
