FROME Heritage Museum is pleased to announce that it will be reopening its doors to the public on June 29th, roughly 15 months after it was obliged to close.
Trustee Barry Edwards explains, “Special precautions will be in place so that visitors will feel safe and secure. This provides an excellent and timely chance for more local people to become involved in the work of the museum.
“There are so many opportunities here: stewarding, research, cataloguing, exhibition planning, social media – the list is endless. The museum is the major location for the history and heritage of the town, preserving and explaining its more than 23,000 items for this and future generations.
“If you are interested, please phone 01373 454611 between 10 am and 2 pm on a weekday to arrange a visit or you can email info@frome-heritage-museum.org ”
The first temporary exhibition of the summer will be a celebration of the lives and works of the Cockey family. Some of their famous street lamps will be on display along with much else.
Later in the year, the museum will be collaborating with Frome College to commemorate the centenary of the Grammar School/Community College.
Barry adds, “This is an exciting project as we want to exhibit uniforms, reports, magazines, photos, even an old desk, that recall 100 years of education on the site.
“We appeal now to any readers who attended either of the schools to lend us any memorabilia that they may have so as to enrich our displays further. Just ring the museum and arrange to deliver at your convenience before the exhibition opens in early August. A centenary is a special milestone and we want to recognise it in as spectacular and comprehensive way as possible.”
From June 29th, the museum on North Parade will be open Tuesday – Saturday from 10am until 2pm. Admission is free but donations are always welcome.
