A new basketball club for young people aged 13 and over is being launched this week at Frome Leisure Centre.
Free for the first six months, the club will meet from 4.30 to 5.30pm. These will be inclusive sessions with a trained support worker to assist participants to learn all the individual abilities required for the game, such as dribbling, passing and shooting, with an experienced coach from Trowbridge Basketball Club. Sessions will be high intensity with lots of play time learning the basics of the game and progressing these skills to a high level while improving fitness.
Organisers said, “This project came about out of feedback from young people themselves in the community as a sport they really wanted to play, so we are so pleased to make it happen!” This is a Purple Elephant and Young People Frome project in partnership with Fusion Leisure, with funding from SASP.
After a few weeks the aim is to start another session for the younger age group on Wednesdays 5.30-6.30pm. Both groups can then progress in the future on to matches against other clubs in the area and join a league. There will also be opportunities for young people involved to complete coaching and training qualifications and assist with delivery of the game, with the big launch at the Frome Sports Festival on Sunday 28th April. Any young person wishing to join the club please book through Fusion at Frome Leisure Centre.
