New bus timetables for D2 and D2X in Frome

New bus timetables for D2 and D2X in Frome

New bus timetables will be introduced across Somerset from 6th April. These will affect the routes of the D2 and D2X services, although other bus services in Frome will remain unchanged.

D2X

The D2X has been taking a route via Radstock to Bath Bus Station during the closure of the A36. From April, the D2X will return to a more direct route but will not revert to running along the A36 into Bath. The bus will turn off at Woolverton and head to Bath via Norton St Philip and Hinton Charterhouse, then continue down the Wellsway.

First Bus has decided that the D2X will no longer serve the Critchill Estate. Instead, after leaving Sainsbury’s in Frome, the service will go to Frome Marketplace via Marston Road and The Butts. After the marketplace, the D2X will go up North Parade and exit Frome along Fromefield, without passing through Stonebridge.

D2

The D2 will revert to its former route, no longer going to Frome Station. However, it will now link Critchill and Stonebridge on its journey to and from Bath, going via Beckington and Rode before following the new D2X route through Norton St Philip and down the Wellsway into Bath.

Evening services, which are subsidised by Somerset Council through a Government BSIP (Bus Service Improvement Plan) award, will continue. The last D2 bus from Bath to Frome departs at around 23:30 from Monday to Saturday. The D2 Sunday bus service between Frome and Bath will continue to run hourly, with the final service leaving Bath bus station at 19:30.

Peter Travis, of Frome and Villages Bus User Group (FAVBUG), said, “We are disappointed that the D2X no longer serves Frome’s major housing estates, and we have expressed our concerns to First. However, this is a commercial service operated by First Group, and they decide on the route their buses take. The good news is that the D2 once again connects Stonebridge with Sainsbury’s and Critchill with Frome Medical Centre and Frome College. We’re also pleased to see that the late evening and Sunday buses connecting Frome and Bath will continue, thanks to increased government funding.”

Cllr Philip Campagna said, “Any change to Frome’s bus services will cause some disruption, and we know the D2 and D2X services have been affected for some time due to the A36 closure. Hopefully, they will settle into a regular pattern again from April. Thanks, as always, to Peter Travis, Somerset Bus Partnership, and FAVBUG for everything they do in terms of sharing timetables, information, and lobbying on behalf of Frome for better bus services.”

  • Patients urged to book vaccination appointments

Patients at Frome Medical Practice are being invited to book their RSV vaccine, which is available to certain groups of patients.

The RSV vaccine helps protect against complications from the respiratory syncytial virus (often referred to as RSV), a common cause of coughs and colds.

Dr Nick Hopkins, GP Partner at Frome Medical Practice, said, “It’s not unusual for people to get the RSV virus several times in their life and it usually gets better by itself, but for some groups of patients it can be more serious, leading to illnesses such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

“Patients are eligible for a free RSV vaccine on the NHS if they are aged 75 to 79 years old or turned 80 years old after 1st September 2024. Women who are 28 weeks or more pregnant can also get the vaccine."

  • Fundraising ‘Moveathon’ for family support charity

Residents are invited to take part in a fundraising ‘Moveathon’ to support a local family support charity this month.

The 12-hour event will raise money for Purple Elephant Family Support and will take place on Sunday 22nd February at Beckington Memorial Hall, with residents encouraged to join in.

It is being run by sports therapist and fitness instructor Lizzie Daschner, of Optimum Health and Sports Therapy, alongside a team of four exercise enthusiasts.

Founder of Purple Elephant, Sue Willis, said, “Lizzie, Olivia, Maritsa and Emily are already part of a team of 10 sponsored runners taking part in the Bath Half Marathon for Purple Elephant in March, so we have been blown away to find out they are also planning to involve as many local people as possible in this additional extraordinary 12-hour event."

  • Founder of Frome Birth Talk steps down from board

The founder of a counselling charity in Frome has stepped down from the board of trustees after almost nine years of service.

Karen Patrick, a midwife, founded Frome Birth Talk in 2017 to help provide mental health support to pregnant and new parents following cuts to government funding, which meant mental health funding was lost.

With help from a team of other passionate local women Karen created Birth Talk, which aimed to provide short-term counselling for 15 people per year, with one therapist on the books.

  • ‘Flipping good’ fun at the first Frome Pancake Dash

Crowds gathered in the town centre on Saturday 14th February for the inaugural Frome Pancake Dash.

From midday, there were crêpes, coffee and cake around the Boyle Cross, plus a raffle by Frome Skatepark Project, a Valentine-themed photo frame, face painting, crafts and free samples of Bonne Maman jam and chocolate spread.

From 1pm to 3pm, 132 people took part in pancake dash ‘waves’, heading from the Blue Boar up to the Boyle Cross while flipping fabric pancakes created by the Frome Shed in heart-shaped frying pans, watched by around 1,000 spectators.

Mayor of Frome Anita Collier said, “What a wonderful event, even the weather behaved itself."

  • Catherine Hill shop to close after 18 years

A shop that has been a staple on Catherine Hill for the last 18 years is due to close next month.

World Basket, which sells a selection of antique, vintage and contemporary rugs and cushions sourced from around the world, will close on 1st March to spend more time on buying expeditions.

Peter Cox, a partner at World Basket, said, “We’ve really enjoyed trading on the hill for the last 18 years, but have decided we don’t need the six days-a-week commitment in the shop. We will be able to spend more time on buying expeditions, a part of our business we really enjoy. We would like to thank all of the customers who have visited our shop over the years. Our last day will be Sunday 1st March, for the Frome Independent Market.”

World Basket will continue trading on its website, www.worldbasket.co.uk, and at various textile shows in London.

  • Prostate support event to provide advice and community support

A free prostate cancer support event will take place later this month, to bring clinical advice and community support to those who need it.

The event will take place on Saturday 28th February from 11am to 1pm at Thomas Arnold Hall in Warminster School.

Attendees will hear from a range of experts, including Sarah Gray from the national charity Tackle Prostate Cancer. Sarah will speak on the importance of local peer support networks such as Open Door, Warminster, as well as Tackle Prostate Cancer’s national campaign work.

A clinical perspective will be provided by David White and Emma Huckle from the NHS, who will outline the specific medical support services available locally.

Marion Barton, Chair of Open Door Warminster, who has organised the event, will discuss the benefits of joining a local group. She will be joined by current members who will share their personal experiences to help demystify the journey.

Open Door operates a regular prostate support group, every second and fourth Monday of the month from 7pm until 8.30pm at the Warminster Athenaeum.

  • Historian to deliver talk on Victorian estate

Architectural historian Julian Orbach will return to Frome to give a talk to the Frome Society on Wiltshire’s little-known great Victorian estate at Grittleton.

Julian will return on Saturday 21st February, to talk about Grittleton, which spans across the M4 near Castle Combe.

Organisers say, “In 1828, Philip Rundell, silversmith to Queen Victoria, died and left £900,000 to his great nephew, Joseph Neeld. He bought the Grittleton Estate and the manor of Chippenham and devoted his life to rebuilding the house and the villages of Grittleton, Alderton, Leigh Delemere and Sevington, which comprised his estate. Julian will describe the extraordinarily rich high Victorian style of the architecture employed in designing the house, with layers of balconies under coffered ceilings of blue, white and gold, contrasting with the much simpler, but still very generous cottages on the estate, each with a large garden and pigsty."

  • Frome boy raises vital funds for local therapy centre

A boy from Frome has donated £130 to a local MS therapy centre that has been supporting his mum for many years.

Archie, 10, made and sold colourful pompom decorations, donating the funds to the Wessex MS Centre in Warminster.

The centre helps people with multiple sclerosis access a range of physical, emotional, and social therapies tailored to manage symptoms, promote independence and enhance overall wellbeing.

Archie’s mum, Rebecca, has been a member of the centre for many years and used to bring Archie along as a baby while attending her therapy sessions.

Chief Executive Officer of the centre, Rosie, said, “Archie’s hard work and enthusiasm captured the spirit of community fundraising and made a real difference to the centre.
