New debt counselling centre to open in Frome

A LOCAL church is to partner with an award-winning charity  to offer debt counselling, following concern from church congregations about the financial hardships of their local communities.

Members of Holy Trinity Church, Frome, amongst others, report that they wanted to help people living with the pressure of debt and got in touch with UK debt counselling charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP). After fundraising, they plan to offer the new, free service from now.

Holy Trinity’s Vicar, Reverend Graham Owen, said, “Debt stress can be so destructive. It affects family relationships, health and can be very isolating. As a compassionate community, we wanted to provide people with a route out of debt and CAP is distinct because it does that in partnership with the church.

“Sometimes people feel they have made mistakes but very often they’ve been driven into debt by suffering from job loss, relationship breakdown or coping with illness in the family or a bereavement – situations that are often difficult, emotional and have a financial impact. The pandemic has only made that worse.

“We have now appointed a dedicated debt centre manager, Phil Gray, who has been given training from CAP to offer a face-to-face, tried-and-tested professional service which will see people escape that debt trap and get their lives back on track.”

The charity report, “CAP has around 300 church-based debt help centres across the UK offering a free service which begins with three home visits.

“TV’s Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has described CAP as “unsurpassed” in its in-depth service which encourages and supports each household to repay what they owe – or go through an insolvency – until the day they are debt free.”

  • Bowls club launch new season with open afternoon

A bowls club in Victoria Park is hosting an open afternoon this Sunday 26th April for anyone to try the game.

The event will start at 2pm at Frome Park Bowls Club and is open to anyone who would like to meet members, play and find out more about bowls.

President Steve West said, “You will be made to feel very welcome. Please wear flat soled shoes or trainers to allow you to go onto the green. This is a free event so what have you got to lose, please give it a go.”

Frome Park Bowls Club has just begun its outdoor season, with members looking forward to a busy programme of games and competitions, including a full fixture list of league and friendly matches this summer.

  • Frome councillor jailed for climate protest shares experience

A Somerset councillor representing Frome who was jailed for his part in a climate demonstration on the M25 has spoken about his time in prison, the impact on his family and the uncertainty of an ongoing appeal.

Mick Dunk, who represents Frome’s West Ward for the Green Party, was sentenced to 26 months in prison for climbing a gantry on the M25 during a 2022 demonstration organised by Just Stop Oil.

He recently served two months in custody, and nine days on remand at HM Prison Wandsworth in 2022, and is now awaiting the outcome of an appeal of sentence while subject to a curfew and electronic tag until July.

Speaking to Frome Times, Mick, who is in his 70s, said he was locked in a cell for up to 23 hours a day while held at HM Prison Wandsworth.

“It was bearable initially when I was sharing a cell with someone who was a co-defendant. The cells are tiny, you get a bunkbed, there’s a toilet at one end and a window high up which you can’t see much out of,” he said. “We weren’t even allowed out at all one Sunday because they didn’t have enough staff, so you are just locked up for 24 hours of the day, that’s not great.”

  • Frome consolidate third place with convincing win

Counties 1 Tribute Southern South
Frome 76 - 5 Swindon

Frome welcomed Swindon to The Lane on Saturday looking to build on recent wins and consolidate on third place in the league.

Frome kicked off and Swindon started strongly with their forwards carrying hard but stout defence, lead by Flanker Dave Martin and Hooker Ali Turpin stopped them in their tracks.

Once Frome got hold of the ball it was worked to the outside and swift interplay between the Cassidy brothers put Toby in for the first try of the day.

The Frome attack marshalled by half backs Billy James and John Benstead continued to find gaps in the visitors’ defence and the second try came when the Cassidy brothers combined again for Sam Cassidy to score.

The Frome forwards were now on top with Eliki Bainimoli and Josh Hills carrying hard into the defence the ball was worked out to Toby Cassidy again and he chipped over the defenders to touch down again.

  • Impressive win over second placed Walcot

Rugby: Counties 1 Tribute Southern South
Walcot 10 - 53 Frome

Frome travelled to Bath to meet old rivals Walcot who were sitting second in the league.

Frome started with attacking intent playing down the hill and from a scrum in the home side’s 22, looked to have scored when Sam Cassidy broke through but the ball was held up over the line.

Frome continued to attack and after a num-
ber of phases close to the line Dave Martin dived over under the posts for a try, converted by Max Stickley.

Walcot hit back immediately with a break down the line to score in the corner for an unconverted try.

Frome continued to press and Murray White broke through to touch down under the posts. Walcot continued to defend stoutly but Frome extended their lead when the home side infringed at the ruck and Max Stickley converted the penalty to give Frome a 17-5 lead at half time.

  • Frome Town seal historic double with dramatic cup final win

Frome Town completed a historic league and cup double with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Portishead Town last night in the Somerset Premier Cup final at Twerton Park.

The Robins capped a remarkable season, having already secured the Southern League Division One title, but were made to work for their latest silverware after twice coming from behind.

Portishead took the lead on 12 minutes, before David Duru brought Frome level just before the break. The Robins fell behind again early in the second half, conceding on 51 minutes, but substitute Sam Meakes equalised with 10 minutes remaining to set up a tense finish.

Callum Gould then struck the decisive goal on 86 minutes to seal the win and spark wild celebrations.

The victory marks Frome’s fifth Somerset Premier Cup triumph, following successes in 1967, 1969, 1983 and 2009, but their last two finals, in 2014 and last year in 2025, have ended in disappointment.

Town fans will have a chance to celebrate the club’s first ever league and cup double in the final game of the season in a repeat fixture against Portishead Town on Saturday at Badgers Hill.

  • Frome bids to become UK’s Town of Culture

Frome has taken the first step in its bid to become the UK’s Town of Culture, with Frome Town Council submitting an expression of interest to the national competition.

The Town of Culture programme celebrates towns where culture is part of everyday life, and where creativity can play a role in strengthening communities, improving wellbeing and supporting local economies.

Following a well-attended stakeholder meeting, Frome’s bid builds on the town’s strong cultural foundations, from its nationally recognised venues and organisations to its network of festivals, markets and community-led activities such as the Carnival and the Children’s Festival.

If successful, the bid could bring up to £3 million of investment to the town, supporting an ambitious programme of cultural activity and a long-term legacy focused on cultural opportunities for local people.
