New film club at the Westway for adults with special needs

A MONTHLY film club for people with special needs has begun at the Westway Cinema and will next take place on Thursday 27th July.

The Film Club was the idea of local carer Claire Burge who felt people with learning difficulties or special needs were missing out on the experience of going to the cinema.

Claire said, “The reasons for starting the film club was so people with special needs could watch a movie and have their needs catered for in a safe environment. It doesn’t matter if they make a lot of noise or need to get up and walk around; I know of some people who don’t like the dark so would need the lights on, and this is all catered for.

“When I got in touch with Beryl at the Westway  she was very helpful and helped start the event quickly.  She has been on board with the whole idea and has given us ideas and support whilst organising the dates.

“The club will run every four weeks on Thursday afternoons and posters will be put up in the cinema and local areas to advertise dates. Tickets cost just £4 per person. If anyone who wishes to come has special requirements, then do get in touch and I will try and help. Wheelchair access is limited so please call to check availability. “Anyone with a learning disability or special needs from the age of 18+ are welcome but it is an unstaffed event, so a carer or family member will need to accompany them.

“We hope that it will be a very relaxing and friendly atmosphere and a place where people with special needs can enjoy each other’s company and make new friends.”
