THE Shared Earth Learning co-operative (SELco) is starting a free club for adults with additional needs, thanks to generous support from sponsors the Ernest Cook Trust, and support from Chris & Cordelia at Vallis Veg in Frome.
SELco has been working outdoors as a not-for-profit organisation with people in and around Frome since 2011 specialising in learning from the land, and nurturing a love of nature. They are offering free places to people with additional needs on a small and friendly horticulture course run on the grounds of Vallis Veg.
Alex and Alyson, who are leading the course, are inviting adults with additional needs and their carers to get in touch to find out more, and said, “if you or someone you know, enjoys being outdoors, would like to meet new people and learn a new skill at the same time please get in touch to arrange a visit!
“The course will run on Mondays from April until August, though participants can join at any time. Working days are flexible depending on individuals and their needs, and full support is given on a maximum 1:5 ratio. Carers are most welcome too!
“SELco can accommodate a variety of needs assessed on an individual basis. The course, tuition and all materials are free; all they ask is a £10 enrolment fee. Visitors are welcomed, by appointment, on their little patch of land and are happy to facilitate taster days before enrolment.”
Forest School leaders Alex And Alyson are also both qualified teachers, with over 30 years experience between them. They are DBS certified, first aiders, passionate about what they do; not to mention really excited about this new project!
