A new show on FromeFM called, ‘Northern Soul’ will be presented by Steve Riley, where he will be playing a selection of the great dance tracks that were spun in clubs in the UK’s North and Midlands.
Steve Riley explains further, “Northern Soul is a music scene that flourished in the UK’s North and Midlands from the late 60s and into the 70s. It has undergone many revivals since and is in the midst of one of its biggest ones right now, with hundreds of venues active across the UK and the music having spread across the world: ex-patriot Brits have set up clubs in Spain, the US, Australia and elsewhere, and an independently formed scene is burgeoning in Japan.
“The music itself is best understood as other labels having a go at Motown’s style. That’s an oversimplification, but it gets us started.
“Because most of these labels were small and obscure, many of their records never troubled the charts and vanished without trace. Many were not even released in the UK, but Northern Soul jocks sought them out in dusty old American warehouses and made them major hits on the Northern Soul circuit.”
Steve’s show on FromeFM will include energetic dance tracks, remembering 1960s/70s all-nighters at clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester (regarded by many as the birthplace of Northern Soul), The Torch in Stoke on Trent, and Wigan Casino.
Join Steve on his show on FromeFM 96.6fm or online at www.frome.fm on Saturday 27th February at 1.00pm to hear music from Northern Soul’s heyday, from the early RnB-inspired Twisted Wheel tracks to storming, up-tempo 1970s sounds and everything in between.
