Nigel Harris was appointed the new president of Frome Chamber of Commerce at the AGM on 3rd August.
Nigel is an accountant with Burton Sweet, leading accountants and business advisers in Somerset and South West UK. He has lived in Frome for many years, and works from The Old Church School, and Burton Sweet’s office in Shepton Mallet. He presents the Small Business Show on Frome FM and has been the Chamber Liaison with Frome College,
Retiring president Neil Howlett said, “Athenians seeking citizenship were required to take an oath they would leave their city a better place than they found it. I think Frome is a better place than it was two years ago. I hope I’ve contributed something to that.
“For me the highlights have been some of the Discuss & Do events, especially those involving young people, the Super Market, and the Frome App. When I go to other parts of Somerset and around England, Frome is recognised as a vibrant town where things happen, which is true.
“It hasn’t always been easy, and there have been some ‘interesting times’. Getting our three tiers of local government to work together has been a challenge; there have been improvements, but we are not there yet. The Chamber plays an independent, non-political role on behalf of business which we have used to encourage that and I’m sure Nigel will continue that.”
Nigel said, “I’ll be spending time with the committee and chamber members over the coming weeks to work out what we should be doing to support local businesses in the Frome area. If you have any suggestions contact me or a member of the committee.”
The next chamber events will be: • The Retail Group which meets at La Strada at 5.45pm on the first Tuesday of every month • A Business Breakfast at La Strada on 11th September.
