JANUARY perks up in Frome with a very cheering start as the Merlin theatre plays host to the comedy brilliance of Man Down and Taskmaster star, Mike Wozniak, on Wednesday 25th January.
This is followed by, captured live from The Olivier Stage, a National Theatre Live screening of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible of Thursday 26th January and then the theatre’s first live drama piece of the year, Mrs Churchill – My Life With Winston as this popular venue welcomes back On A Role Theatre to its stage on Saturday 28th January.
Professional touring company, On A Role, set up and run by arts consultant, after-dinner speaker, director and writer Chris Jaeger MBE, brings its new, fascinating play to town, asking the questions – is it true, as they say, that behind every great man, there is a great woman? Was this true in Churchill’s case?
Clementine, was Churchill’s wife for 56 years. Did he bully her like he did so many other people? Was he as irascible at home as he was in the House of Commons? Given his strength and conviction, did Clementine have any influence on him at all? Or was she ‘the little lady at home’? Winston famously said, “My most brilliant achievement was my ability to be able to persuade my wife to marry me.” So, what was it like, being the wife of one of the most famous Englishmen who has ever lived?
Liz Grand carries this superb one-woman show in a moving, sensitive and informative portrayal of Clementine Churchill, offering answers and insight into the personal life behind the public images, in this new play. Liz previously brought the gripping ‘Where Is Mrs. Christie?’ to Frome and this seasoned, stylish actor is sure to captivate audiences again when she takes to the Merlin Theatre stage on Saturday 28th January.
