THE new unitary authority for Somerset known as Somerset Council, officially came into being on Saturday 1st April.
Somerset Council will be in charge of all services currently provided by the county and district councils that includes adult and children’s social services, highways, leisure facilities, planning and some council housing.
The council is replacing Somerset West and Taunton Council, Mendip District Council, Sedgemoor District Council and South Somerset District Council, as well as the county council itself.
Leader of Frome Town Council Anita Collier said, “My colleagues have already been working closely in preparation for the transition and we are confident that the new Somerset Council will herald a new dawn for our working relationship with our local authority. There is lot is to be done and we look forward to working closely, in particular with our new local Somerset councillors.”
