A group of protesters stood in the Market Place on Saturday morning 16th November to protest against page 3 models.
This was just part of a larger, nationwide campaign involving thousands of people up and down the country who want to get the daily photo of a topless model in the Sun Newspaper banned.
The organiser of the Frome protest, mother of two Rosie Eliot said, “I wanted to get as many people as I could to support the campaign by signing the NO MORE PAGE 3 petition. It was a fantastic protest and so many members of the public stopped to join in and commit to signing the petition.
“Most of the discussions were around how a so called family newspaper, which sells millions of copies a day to British households, is seen by children and young people in those households, and how the photo of the topless model, often only a teenager herself, impacts on the lives of those young people.
“We have terrible problems in this country with young people with eating disorders and depression which is very often attributed to poor body image. And boys and young men are exposed on a daily basis to free soft porn in their family newspaper. This can’t be right! I think these photographs of semi naked girls have a negative impact on society’s views of women and their capabilities.
“I fully appreciate this is only the tip of the iceberg where the sexualisation of women and young girls in society as a whole, and especially in modern pop videos, reinforces this negative impact of woman and their status in society. Well I don’t want to put up with that any more, I want more people to stand up and say ‘that’s not good, I’m going to do something about it’ and sign that petition at Change.org.
“The NO MORE PAGE 3 movement wants to get as much support as possible to persuade Dominic Mohan, the editor of the Sun newspaper to scrap page 3 topless photo’s. It was a very positive and empowering protest and I firmly believe, even though this might take a long time to come to fruition, it will have a positive impact on society as a whole.”
