No strings attached to prize for Frome puppeteers

Frome puppet winners
Nik and Sarah from Noisy Oyster

TWO FROME puppeteers have  scooped a prize at the World Puppet Carnival in Indonesia.

Nik Palmer and Sarah Rowland-Barker of puppet theatre company ‘Noisy Oyster’ were among artists from over 40 countries at the Wayang World Puppet Carnival 2013, the biggest puppet carnival in the world.

The duo took their lovable character ‘Plain Bob’ to the Carnival earlier this month, and their show won the ‘best street show’ category. It was also nominated for ‘best children’s show’.

The show has no dialogue, making it easily accessible to non-English speaking audiences, and involves a lot of audience participation.

Nik said, “We had lots of compliments from people who thought the show was brilliant. It was one of the best audiences we’ve had – and we had a big audience of Indonesian kids who were very excited!

“The whole festival had quite a cross section of different styles – how they chose the prizes I’ll never know! It’s very stimulating, and great to see other people’s work. Although there was a bit of a language problem with some, they were very visual as well.

“The whole experience was fantastic, though a little chaotic at times. The festival started with a big parade where each country processed behind their own country flag and banner bearers, just like the Olympics! The opening ceremony was a very grand affair with traditional dancers in lavish costumes and gamelan music, and was attended by the vice-president of Indonesia.”

The duo won £1,000 US dollars, which went towards their travel costs.

One advantage of the Plain Bob show is that it is small enough to be transported with Nik and Sarah on the plane. But it did take up their luggage allowance – leading to problems when they were presented with their trophy!

Nik said, “We were very limited with our aeroplane weight allowance as most of our allocation was taken up by the show. So we had a bit of a problem when they presented us with this heavy trophy. We had to dismantle it, discard the wooden bits and post the rest home. I will have to make a new base for it when it arrives.”

Nik and Sarah have been working together for eight years, performing locally and at festivals at home and  abroad. They have made appearances at Glastonbury Festival, Skipton Puppet Festival, and travelled to many other countries including the Czech Republic and Denmark.

  • Children’s Festival to return next month to kick-start the summer holidays

Plans for the free annual Children’s Festival are underway by the team at Frome charity Purple Elephant Family Support.

The festival is a celebration of childhood, and this year’s event falls just in time to start the school summer holidays, on Sunday 27th July.

Predicted to attract around 3,000 people in the centre of Frome, the Children’s Festival begins at the entry point in the Cattle Market car park outside the Cheese and Grain and uses the room inside the venue. It then runs along the river path, throughout Welshmill Woods and also fills Welshmill Park with fun.

  • Frome Festival founder to share story of Stratford Roundhouse Theatre.

A rare opportunity to hear Frome Festival founder and president Martin Bax talk about his experimental work with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in Stratford is coming to the Merlin Theatre on Sunday 6th July.

This event begins with a documentary film by multi-award-winning director Andrew Smith describing Martin’s work in Stratford, where he organised an experimental season of plays, reviews, films, poetry readings and concerts with members of the RSC. This led eventually to the second permanent theatrical space in Stratford called The Other Place.

Martin converted the 18th -century building, listed by Historic England as ‘Summerhouse in Avonbank Garden’, into a fully functional experimental theatre. He called it the Roundhouse Stratford, as the company was also involved with experimental work in the Roundhouse in London.

  • Frome’s enterprising women to showcase business journeys

Local enterprising women are set to share their business journeys at a special project showcase.

The event, on Friday 27th June at 1pm in Frome Town Hall, will celebrate the progress of women who have taken the next step towards making their business dreams a reality.

For 20 weeks, the group has been part of Edventure’s Enterprising Women course. This hands-on programme has guided them through every step of launching a business, from planning and finance to marketing and building a support network.

“Now, this tight-knit and supportive group are ready to show the community just how far they have come,” said James Wallis from Edventure.

“The showcase is open to all and is a fantastic opportunity for local residents to meet the people creating small businesses in and around Frome and learn about the challenges and triumphs along the way. Mini-stalls, presentations and discussions will highlight the progress each entrepreneur has made and what’s next for their ventures.”

  • Frome resident shares story of British Prisoners of War at next Frome Society Talk.

A Frome resident who spent 25 years working for the RSPB will give a talk entitled ‘Birds in a Cage’ at Frome Society’s next Summer Extra talk on 25th June.

Derek Niemann is a freelance writer, author and a tutor for Cambridge University. Derek has been a country diary writer for the Guardian since 2003; he switched his column from Bedfordshire to writing from Frome in 2024 and is enjoying exploring the Somerset environment.

Derek will share the story of ‘Birds in a Cage’ a true story of a group of British Prisoners of War. In 1940s Germany they overcome hunger, hardship, fear and stultifying boredom through their shared love of birds and birdwatching. “Their experiences leave them scarred but set them on a path to becoming pioneers of the post-war nature conservation movement,” said Jayne Sadgrove from Frome Society.

  • Packsaddle Fields campaigners appeal to close £10,000 fundraising shortfall

In their final fight to save Packsaddle Community Fields, campaigners are calling on the community to help them plug a £10,000 shortfall to cover legal costs ahead of an appeal hearing in August.

The People for Packsaddle group launched a fundraising campaign earlier this year to support their legal challenge, but say they are still working to meet their target and urgently need help to raise the final £10,000.

The group is preparing to become a Rule 6 Party in the planning appeal, which will determine whether developer LiveWest can build 74 houses on the green space.

They say the funds are needed to secure legal representation, including a barrister and supporting legal team, to take part fully in the hearing.

A community event at Badgers Hill is inviting residents to come together and discuss how people can work together, open up possibilities and solve challenges to facilitate creativity and community in Frome.

The event is being delivered by Frome Town Council and Terrestrial, a company which commissions and produces arts projects. It is due to run on Wednesday 25th June from 9.30am to 1.30pm. Free tickets for the event includes lunch by Sonny’s Kitchen.

  • ‘It’s getting tougher for all small charities’ – Frome Birth Talk extends community fundraising campaign until end of year

Local charity Frome Birth Talk has extended its fundraising campaign until the end of the year as it seeks to secure more monthly donors to help secure the charity’s future.

The campaign launched in March, with the charity aiming to raise £1,000 per month in regular donations to help cover running costs until 1st June. With that date now passed and £700 secured, the charity has decided to keep the fundraiser open until the end of year, in the hope to secure more donors and ultimately Frome Birth Talk’s future.

“We are extremely thankful for our one-off donations but it’s really helpful for us to see a projection of what is to come,” said counselling coordinator Lucy Hill who explained that the charity is hoping to increase the amount of people who can donate on a monthly basis.

“It’s getting harder and harder to guarantee grants, so to have a community of people who are supporting us regularly is incredibly helpful.”
